As far as overseas profits, if the US corporate rate was in line with the lower rates around the world, they wouldn't need to store profits elsewhere. And they wouldn't need to have all the carve outs that the tax code currently allows.
Agreed. Companies that are availing themselves of proper tax law advice aren't "dodging" a single thing. It's the US that has uncompetitive tax rates that are driving companies overseas. If the US would actually compete on such tax rates, then it could be a much different story.

We'll get our true socialism once we eliminate corporate taxes and start paying companies to put butts in chairs.

Nobody is "dodging" anything.
They are simply finding and using perfectly legal means to pay the lowest total tax bill possible. What is wrong with that? Nothing.
And we know exactly what is their mind set and how they do it. So we know exactly what to do about it. If we want them bringing investment and jobs here, then make here the place with the lowest taxes. Won't give us a win in every case, but we'll win more than we do with the highest corporate tax rates in the world.

As much as I'd like to see us cut some overseas bases and get involved in much less military adventurism, we have to remember that without the U.S., there IS NO FREE WORLD. We just have to be very mindful of where, when and how we get involved in the affairs of other nations, especially since we can not afford it. Stick to cases where our U.S. interests are directly threatened. Forget places like Libya, Syria, etc. Of course, this would require a major shift in thinking of many in Washington, D.C. so it is unlikely to ever happen.
Now, don't jump me for saying we are free. I'm aware of all that has gone on regarding our rights.
It is past time for us to have a national conversation about our role in the world. You think any other country will stand up for the oppressed? WHO, specifically?
I think its more of whether or not access to the global economy would be reduced without the freedom of the seas that the US currently enforces.

Especially when much of what they do is specifically encouraged by our politicians.
They may or may not have expected the reaction they got, but I find it a massive joke for Obama to be talking about closing loopholes while simultaneously issuing all sorts of tax credits and incentives.... which are by definition, loopholes.
