Be safe, Blazers in the South (most of you)...
I've been following some of the winter storm developments, most of them posted by a meteorologist friend of mine in Atlanta. It looks like what's headed your way today and tomorrow is going to be worse than the last one.
If you are in Athens, Ga., and points northeast of there, the prediction is now for more than 1" of ice, and power failures that will rival the Blizzard of '93, and possibly last up to a month.

His latest post:
Quote:OK, jargon-free update. Remember the big mess in Birmingham and Atlanta two weeks ago? Today-Thursday, it's Athens, GA's turn to be Ground Zero. And points eastward. If the best model forecasts verify, places from the eastern suburbs of Atlanta (maybe Atlanta) through Athens and into central South Carolina could be bombed with a historic ice storm. THIS IS NOT FUN. THIS IS LIFE-THREATENING. These areas could have 1" of ice or more on everything. You can't salt for this. That much ice destroys power lines and cell phone towers and trees and tree branches in massive quantities. You could be out of power for weeks. I'm not exaggerating. See this, from The Weather Channel: http://i.imwx.com/images/maps/truvu/map_...50x366.jpg
We local meteorologists are not enjoying this snow day, because the forecasts for the next two days are for life-disrupting impacts in Athens and points eastward. Impacts that won't magically melt away in a day, or a weekend, or even a week.

Try this ice map: http://www.spia-index.com/seIce.php
Then there was this little love note for South Carolina:
"Parts of South Carolina could find themselves in a Category 4 ice storm by tomorrow, which is described thus: “Prolonged and widespread utility interruptions with extensive damage to main distribution feeder lines and some high voltage transmission lines/structures. Outages lasting 5 to 10 days.”
1/2" to 1" of ice, with snow on top? No offense, Atlanta, but y'all can have our share of that'un.

That means Chattanooga is about to get hard.
What Chattanooga does behind closed doors is their business.
