Is This "Over The Top" ?
I understand that fans of the WBB team are upset, but does this statement in a Blade story bother you?
Speaking to a room of reporters Thursday after a gutless 82-62 defeat, Cullop did to her team what Akron had done. She ripped into them.

Note....i did not see the game but...Should criticism be less harsh because they are women? If they stunk up the joint they stunk up the joint.

RE: Is This "Over The Top" ?
I admit I raised an eyebrow when I saw the word "gutless" being used (and not part of a quote) in a game story, as opposed to an opinion column. However, watching last night's debacle made me raise an eyebrow even more.

RE: Is This "Over The Top" ?
The true measure of the team and coach is how they pull out of this. This also includes the fans. Will we still be leading the league in attendance at the end of the season? We all know they are undermanned with a young team this season, plus injuries took their toll. Didn't they basically loose an entire class, maybe it would be the sophomores this year? The freshmen aren't producing and our starters are logging a ton of minutes. We might see much of the same next year when we have another full house of talented freshmen. Can the fans wait a few more years?
Not a fan of a game article using the term gutless, that is probablly more fitting for an editorial opinion piece where a spade can be called a spade. I'm also not a fan of any coach disparaging his/her team in the media but there is a fine line with berating the team in public and answering the questions about a poor performance. I think coach K dances a fine line in his post game comments about individual players. I know he wants to win as bad as anyone, but coach in practice and the games, not in comments to the media.
I did like the last line of the article " “It was not an X’s and O’s problem,” she said. “It was a heart and desire problem, and that’s something I hope you never say about one of my teams again.” This tells me coach Cullop will get this fixed. It shouldn't be suprising to anyone this is a .500 team this year and it will take an amazing effort by the coach and team to pull it off. To date I've said before this year might be coach Cullops best coaching year yet.
I remember when Amstutz had one or two entire classes (maybe more) almost dissapear and not make it to their senior years, thus starting us on this long cycle of being talented but young. Even now we're just comming out of it and having upperclassmen be our main contributors.

RE: Is This "Over The Top" ?
I have no problem with the article and no problem with the comments from Coach Cullop. Honesty is the only way to get problems fixed, and I thought she was just being straightforward. The first step to solving a problem is identifying it. She clearly has done that. Maybe it's not the entire problem, but it's a large enough piece that it is hurting the team. She will get it all taken care of. This year? Maybe not. But she WILL get the problem solved. We have seen her enough years to know that.

Not sure if we have a group of talented freshmen coming in next year. I don't see how we can access that until we see them play a season or maybe even two years. What is certain is that the team will be dominated (in terms of numbers) by freshmen and sophomores next year and someone or two will have to step up if the team is going to be competitive in the MAC.

They played very BAD. Never seen a game like that. I know they are under manned, but this was very bad for Toledo team.

I guess it's just like any sport. On paper and by all reports it sounds like the incoming group has talent, height and ability. Same goes for football, every year we seem to have the top recruiting class in the MAC. In some instances I'm still waiting to see the results on the field, but for now all we have is the paper. The lady rockets will be very young the next two years and fans may need to bite their lips while the team matures. This was going to be at best a .500 season. If this year's freshmen class is a wash talent-wise, it may be a few more years. We signed Coach Cullop to a long term deal, right?

The women's team has been exceptional for several years. I don't have a problem with a down year where they are essentially a 500 team. Where I begin to get concerned is if the down period extends through the 2014-15 season or even into the following season. I suspect that back to back mediocre seasons will impact attendance and fan support. And it will be more difficult to contend that we have a premium program in the league. Reloading is tough to do and almost impossible when you have a wash out recruiting year like last year.

"Gutless" is commentary and poor one at that. Shouldn't have gotten by an editor that can read. Now if the writer were quoting someone? Fair game.

I think that "gutless" was the wrong adjective. To me gutless mean cowardly and I thought their problem was a lack of focus, energy, intensity and purpose, not a lack of courage. Otherwise I thought the article pretty much captured and accurately reflected Coach Cullop displeasure with her team's performance. I am sure that after two similar lackadaisical starts in a row Coach Cullop is going to try to lite a fire under them and I am really looking forward to Sunday's game. For the last several years this game has had a "big time atmosphere" to it with Savage packed and with a great turnout of BG fans as well, and, win or lose, I expect another great rivalry game in that tradition.
Actually this loss to Akron pales in comparison to the 2006 game when a pathetic 0-9 (in conference) Akron team came into Savage and defeated a completely non-focused Lady Rocket team.

Everybody keeps saying the freshmen aren't producing. I thought Janice Monakana had a pretty good game. Coach kept taking her out and maybe she should not have since she was putting in the effort. The frosh produced early in the season and then started choking and coach stopped playing them much. Elana has had a couple good games. Baker had a good game but is struggling with injuries. Olivia and Sophie are works in progress but I see potential down the road.
