Scarlett Johansson as The Major? I could buy it based on her Black Widow work.

Well this popped up today on DH. Interesting... maybe this thing will be real. I think this whole movie considering The Matrix, and that latest Tron movie, is totally doable in live action.

I know why it's Scarlett Johannson, but it really should have been an Asian actress playing this part.

RE: Ghost in the Shell goes 3D Live Action
Just got out of watching it...

Man, I'm conflicted on this one.....

*IF* I had never seen the anime at all and watched this movie... I would argue it felt like a traditional cyber action movie that Hollywood has been putting out with some good points memories vs. actions making you the person/cyborg you are. I did kind of how they played Kuze to Motoko. I liked the major players and how they were acted on screen. The "white washing" kind of got answered in the movie in how they played out her origin story. I actually kind of did like that part... gave it a basis.

Agree with Mao's take on it being shot so tight with not a lot of scenery/wide shots to the action.... I really think that could have helped.... The city felt like if I was in the world of Blade Runner during the day.

***********

**BUT** I have watched all the anime movies and tv series. And to that end, it felt like I was watching some hodge podge of GitS1,2, 3, and SAC mixed together with parts taken from each... and in some cases scenes themselves. It didn't feel like an original story told with the characters--it felt like a "here is the best way" I can put the source material together for a movie. And then, only to wrap it around a homage remake of the original. The originality points of how The Major became The major, her tie to Kuze, her past, how Batou got is his special eyes, and Aramaki being even more OG than he was in the shows (showing he can work a gun with the best of them, and he still is on top of his game mentally....in other words he's tough to outwit) was done pretty well IMO.

I enjoyed the movie in IMAX. The story was believable and the visuals were stunningly good. The story wasn't as fleshed out as some wanted it to be, but do you tell the whole story of a franchise like this in one movie?

I give it 4 out of 5.
