APR is a 4 year rolling average...as they want schools to perform well academically year in and year out (hence the 4 year average).
Also, with players leaving after a year or two, its almost impossible to get immediate data for all 340 plus Div I schools that field 14 to 30 plus sports teams.
Some may not realize that EVERY sport team has APR minimums to hit...not just hoop or football teams.
While not a perfect system, its a much better system than what was in place before...where kids did not have to be on a "graduate" track...as players use to be able to take any and all classes, regardless of major, just to stay eligible...now, players have minimums each year (progression to a certain degree) to hit to help more eventually graduate.
