They had 3 winning seasons in the MAC....

For all intents and purposes that places Temple a half step above Eastern Michigan and Kent State as to what they've accomplished in the conference but I digress.

RE: Temple to Big East?
I was a tad off in my estimations of how the C-USA board would handle this news....the prevailing sentiment seems to be that Temple to the BE means UL will soon be leaving, thus the new BE will be weaker than ever. (which makes them happy!). They have quickly forgotten how most of them have been coveting Temple for their Alliance thing conference...not anymore it seems! I do get a kick outta reading some of those threads over there....now they can move on to discussing DIAA football schools for membership (not sure how that strengthens their conference, though).

I know he was but I thought I'd throw that observation I made in.

OH NOES! What will the MAC do without its sixth best football team?

Don't let the door hit you.

Not only that if the BE loses Louisville there is a good chance they target an alliance school..

My opinion is no more football-only. UMass must bring basketball to the MAC East or cut ties with them. Bring in another all-sports eastern team for UMass and Buffalo. If ECU heads to the Big East eventually, Marshall would be making a mistake by not coming back. Otherwise maybe Old Dominion.

UMass will have to decide if they want to stay in the A-10 with their best program leaving. If they decide to stay, Im OK with that. Then lets get back to the 12 team MAC.

I wonder what Xavier bball fans are thinking right now.

UMass fans already talking like Temple fans. At this point I think it would be a mistake to let them continue in the MAC as football only. They clearly already talk down to the MAC and view it as a 2-3 year stepping stone and then they are off and we are left with another mess. I understand they want to do whats best for their program, but if they don't want to be here, then let them go now instead of later.

Where does the MAC go from here? What about UMass, their biggest A-10 basketball team just left too.

McMurphy has an excellent reputation for never calling a move a done deal until it happens so I would consider it done at this point after all the months of Temple to BE discussion.

This really kicks the alliance expansion plan square in the nuts because they were banking on upgrading the TV contract around the Temple addition. The alliance could go after UMass but they are totally unproven.

I would say that most likely for 2012 the MAC goes back to 13 teams. There isn't enough time to get a fill-in for Temple as you must give the NCAA a year in advance notice before moving from FCS to FBS.

By 2013 depending on what the alliance does there may be more expansion. After the alliance makes its moves to get ready for next year will the MAC be sitting at 13? at 12? who knows at this point.
