Quote:West Virginia hired Oklahoma State assistant coach Joe DeForest, the school announced Saturday.
Earlier this week, DeForest told The Tulsa World he had resigned to join the Mountaineers. According to the West Virginia release, coach Dana Holgorsen will announce the coaching responsibilities of his new hires once his staff is complete.
I like this hire with WVU headed to the Big XII. It'll be nice to have people in charge of the defensive staff with Big XII experience...
Quote:Dana Holgorsen is luring another NFL assistant to Morgantown.
A member of the WVU football staff has confirmed the Mountaineers will hire Mike Smith to coach linebackers at WVU. Smith was recently promoted to outside linebackers coach for the New York Jets after beginning the season as an intern for the staff.
Smith played linebacker at Texas Tech while Holgorsen was an assistant for the Red Raiders and was offered a position on Mike Leach’s staff in December, but declined to remain with the Jets.
I like this hire too. His NFL experience should be enticing to prospective players, which will be a big benefit in recruiting...
I'm curious to see who fills out the staff. Half of the defensive staff is already in place for next season. I hope they finish the hires soon. It's not good to have staff moves like this at the end of the recruiting season...
WVU lost 2 recruits because of the moves. But we gained 2 at the same time. We lost a WR and DB, and gained a RB and DB. The WR loss is no big deal, since WVU is loading up at WR. The DB loss is pretty much the same, and the kid we got is probably better than the one we lost. The RB pickup was a nice surprise...
I'm just glad WVU isn't in Pitt's position. Their recruits are starting to scatter to the 4 winds. One of 'em, OG Adam Pankey, may end up at WVU...
Quote:If reports are accurate, Dana Holgorsen has just finished hiring his defensive staff to replace Jeff Casteel and crew that moved on to Arizona.
Mike Smith, who was a linebacker at Texas Tech while Holgorsen was there, has been unofficially named the linebackers coach. It is unclear at this moment, but it appears that he will also have a hand in coordinator duties.
Previously, Holgorsen announced the addition of Joe DeForest from Oklahoma St. DeForest will have a hand in special teams, likely will coach the safeties and will also likely be a co-coordinator.
This morning Football Scoop announced that Daron Roberts will move over from being the WR coach to coach the corners. Couple that trio with holdover Steve Dunlap and you’ve got the defensive staff in place.
I'm curious to see how the new staff works out next season. WVU is switching defenses, and the players will have to adjust...

Do you think the good Lord would allow a fine southern boy like Eli to make to the Super Bowl, and then deny him the chance to surpass his big brother Peyton, whose light shined far brighter, until it was suddenly extinguished? Never!
