The Official "Fire Scott Sanderson" Thread
Scott Sanderson should be fired.

Consider: If we define a close game as one decided by 3 points or less, or one where both teams have the lead in the last 4 minutes, Lipscomb has been in 17 close games in the last 2 seasons.

Their record? 4-13. (Or 5-12, depending on how you count the Arizona game.) Against A-Sun teams, including today, they're 3-12.

That's not bad luck. That's bad coaching.

The head coach makes his money in the tight battles with the outcome in doubt. A decent head coach should win around half of the time, a good one maybe a bit more than 50%.

If Lipscomb had won half of their close conference games last year, they would have been conference champs and at least gone to the NIT.

In the last 6 years, Scott Sanderson-coached Lipscomb teams have won 27% of their close games. If his close-games winning percentage were a batting average, he'd be a back-up shortstop for the Kansas City Royals.

Blowouts are about recruiting and scheduling, but close games are about coaching. The assistants are doing a good job recruiting good players, but somehow Scott Sanderson is taking good players in winnable games and finding ways to lose.

Please understand. I like Coach Sanderson as a person. The players who play for him seem like good guys.

But if Lipscomb really wants to be taken seriously as a D-1 school, there needs to be some level of accountability for winning and losing.

So here it is. Nothing against Kennesaw, but after what happened today, heads should roll.

Dad, the telling sign to me about his coaching ability is lack of defense. He has mentioned all year that they have struggled defensively, but he doesn't seem to have made adjustments. They can turn it on at times (like against Belmont), but they lose the focus on it too many times.

Whether or not he should be fired I do not know, but losing as the #1 seed to the #8 is going to get you a lot of negative attention. It's gonna be a rough walk back into the office.

RE: The Official "Fire Scott Sanderson" Thread
OK, here we go.

Initial reactions:

-- A few years overdue, but not surprising. Sanderson lost me after the 2010 A-Sun Tournament debacle (see above), then lost some more people when he said no to ESPN setting up a game around Buster Olney's Don Meyer book. It took the rest of the fan base a few years to catch up, but I don't think many people are that upset, or even surprised.

-- A lot of Don Meyer's people are now in key positions in the program. Philip Hutcheson is the AD, Pete Frodden and Shaun Senters played for him, and Greg Brown (the women's coach) was a student assistant. I have no inside knowledge, but I suspect that the next hire will be from "inside the family," or at least to have the Don Meyer Seal of Approval. (Not that this is a bad thing; some of the best high school coaches in Nashville are Don Meyer alumni).

-- One of the hallmarks of Lipscomb in the 80's & 90's was the ability to recruit OVC-level talent to an NAIA school. Now that Lipscomb is A-Sun (for now?), the idea of "over-recruiting" becomes much harder to pull off. After 14 years under Sanderson, I don't know how high the fan base's expectations are anymore, but if the next coach can't "over-recruit" the way Lipscomb did in the past, those who are expecting a lot are likely to be disappointed.
