Now we're arguing about whether we should be celebrating a certain commit or not? Seriously?
Damn, we should celebrate ALL of them as being good football players and wanting to be Tigers.

Where did one of the greatest football players ever, Walter Payton, play college ball? A general rule only means there are exceptions.

I was not that impressed with TJ Pitts when he came out of High School and he was a three star RB. He stated "Virginia, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Southern Miss, Mississippi State and Memphis have offered,".

Boy this thread got ugly quickly. IMHO TW is in the past and Coach Porter is the future and I like this pickup.

I guess I never will. When did TW become off limits?
Bashing someone would imply that it was unearned and we all know how heralded his classes were.

Other factors impact a players success as well: 1) Coaching 2) System and 3) Supporting Cast (ie skill at other positions).

I was not referring to his success or failure but pointing out how many BCS schools were looking at signing him but he still picked the Tigers.
I think before he got hurt he would have been outstanding.

Well, just going by the Rivals' Ratings - which is about all we really have - he's one of the Top 5 recruits for Memphis in the last 5 years. He's rated at 5.7 (5.8 is a 4-star).
In 2006, we had ONE recruit rated this high - Duke Calhoun at 5.7.
In 2007, we had ZERO rated 5.7 or better.
In 2008, we had ZERO rated 5.7 or better.
In 2009, we had ONE recruit rate this high - Justin Thompson at 5.8.
In 2010, we have ONE 5.8 and TWO 5.7, so far.
So, I'd have to say that he's a pretty good "get".

RE: Huge Football commit
Any 3 star is a good pickup for the Tigers. We cannot expect five stars. We shouldn't expect anything more than one or two four stars in a given class. What we do need is a solid core of 3 stars. This guy seems like a very solid 3 star. If we can fill our our team with 3 stars, we should be near the top of C-USA year after year.

RE: Huge Football commit
I am just glad that Porter is getting players he wants and getting them committed before signing date. Seems like in the past we have waited to see who the " big Boys" didnt sign. If he thinks they can play and be Tigers that is good enough for me. In my 60 years of watching football I have never asked how many stars someone had when they made a tackle, catch , good run or block etc. Stars are a recruiting tool and a rating system used by the recruiting services. You can measure weight , height , speed , vertical leap , strength etc, You cannot measure heart desire and coachability. Somehow I think Coach Porter has a feel for determining this. I will add that there are a lot of changes in young men. mental, physical, and emotional, between the ages of 17 and 21. ( believe it or not , I can still remember). It will be a few years before we can really rate this years class , but so far I really like the looks of it

Right on the mark, sometimes the difference is finding the lower rated players that turn out to be special. The Patrick Willis comment is a perfect example. We just have to remember that building a football program is a multi year job and you won't see the end product until these classes mature. I find it extremely interesting that some want to expect a BCS level class when we haven't had a competitive CUSA class over the past years. Not a bash (for those sympathetic or whatever) but an opinion based on all the comparisons. I like it and believe the next 2 classes will tell the tale over the long run. This one is shaping up just fine by my standards and the time frame available.
