Record-Setting Night Sends Trojans Past Arkansas State, 107-83
03/02/2006

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- It took just one half for Troy to put its mark on the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Friday night as the Trojans tied the single-game record of 15 three-pointers in the first 20 minutes to run away from Arkansas State, 107-83 at the Murphy Center. Cedric Jackson and Boo Ramsey led the Trojans with 28 and 26 points, respectively.

The Trojans (14-14) set team tournament records for points in a half (66/1st), points in a game (107), three-pointers made (23) and three-pointers attempted (40). Additionally, Bobby Dixon had a record 14 assists and Ramsey hit 87.5 percent (seven of eight) from three-point range.

Troy, seeded sixth in the West, advances to play No. 2 West Louisiana-Lafayette Sunday at 8:30 p.m in the quarterfinals. The Trojans swept the regular-season series with the Ragin' Cajuns.

The teams were tied 4-4 when Troy surged ahead. An 8-0 run on a three-pointer by Dixon and a dunk and three-pointer by Jackson set the tone for an incredible half. Back-to-back threes by Jackson and one of Ramsey's treys later stetched a 14-10 lead to 23-12 and 11 straight points started a 19-2 surge that turned a 44-28 advantage into a 33-point bluge, 63-30 with 2:32 left in the period. It ended with Troy ahead 66-37.

By the end of the half, Troy was shooting 63.9 percent (23 of 36) from the field overall and 68.2 percent (15 of 22) from behind the three-point arc. The 66 points were the Trojans most in a period this season, surpassing a 63-point opening frame vs. Oakwood.

"Needless to say, we had a great shooting night," said Head Coach Don Maestri. "Especially from the three-point area with seven different players hitting from behind the arc and the percentage above 50. We have not been shooting the ball well the last three or four games, so this was good for our kids' confidence."

The second half amounted to the Trojans' running out the clock. Arkansas State (12-18) cut the deficit to 23 on three occasions, but each time Troy answered with at least a basket.

Jackson finished the night with a career-best in scoring by hitting 11 of 13 from the field, including six of eight from behind the arc. Ramsey equalled his best while adding six rebounds.

"In the game earlier in the year with Arkansas State, we felt we had a lackadaisical performance, that we didn't come to play," said Dixon. "This game, we just came together and played as a team."
