Cincinnati at #7 Kansas Game Thread - UCGrad1992 - 01-21-2024 08:09 PM

Out of the frying pan and into the fire. Kansas won't be ranked #3 tomorrow but this is clearly our biggest challenge outside of Houston. If only once, ONCE we could have our guys making circus shots out of their ass instead of the other way around...

MON 9:00pm ESPN
Cincinnati o146
3 Kansas -8.5

Journalist road warriors...

The Phog is a tough place to steal a win from on a good day...

A true basketball palace, though.

This aint the usual Kansas team.

These guys are beatable. Hunter Dickinson is a bit overrated.

If the good cats catch them on a bad night, it could happen.

I'm not asking for circus shots. I just would like all these things to happen on the same night (tonight or any night):

Good Dan show up
Day Day make his layups
Vik not disappear or get frustrated
Simas make his 3's
Shoot over 75% from the line
Single digit turnovers
CJ Fredrick to play
Wes wow us with his in-game adjustments

I mean, that's not too much to ask is it?......is it?

I'd settle for Wes not looking like his dog was just euthanized in his post game presser. Would mean some of those things you listed happened.

I'll be happy if the Cats don't get embarrassed.

Day Day has been deadly getting to the basket in conference play (finishing is another matter sometime...but he had some huge ones down the stretch against TCU). Oklahoma was the first team I really saw gameplan to take that part of our game away. They refused to let Day Day get a head of steam to break down the defense. They sent doubles on basically every screen to push him out. We actually turned it into some good looks early with good ball movement, though we didn't capitalize enough. It will be interesting to see if other teams (including Kansas tonight) try a similar approach.

I don't think we'll get blown out... Thank God, those Brannen 40+ blowout days seem to be a thing of the past.

But I don't know that this will be competitive, either. Anything within 8 points will be a good showing. (Or, in other words, just cover the spread...)

RE: Cincinnati at #3 Kansas Game Thread - rath v2.0 - 01-22-2024 12:57 PM

We won't get blown out. Doesn't seem to be in the cards with the style we are playing. Besides, Kansas just doesn't look like Kansas right now. I'm not sure if that is because they aren't as good as normal or if that is because comparably so many teams were able to drastically improve their rosters in one offseason due to the portal and NIL

Strange year where there are a lot of good teams but not very many great teams.

This may be a game that Reynolds plays an extended role. I know he's often a tad late [or unwilling] to get after it on dee at times but Kansas' center Dickinson is 7'2" 260. The only big that matches that size for us is Reynolds.

Hopefully we have that breakthrough game on Alley Oops tonight.

That's my take as well. We know Kansas will always have blue chip talent but this year's version hardly looks like a national championship team to me as of late January. We know when our 'Cats play at their best, they've competed with the four ranked B12 teams they've played so far.

I'm not saying UC will win, but I bet they compete and hang tough. A respectable loss there doesn't derail postseason plans. But it will mean coming home and taking care of business against UCF will be a must.

RE: Cincinnati at #3 Kansas Game Thread - rath v2.0 - 01-22-2024 07:13 PM

Yup. I'll be surprised if UC doesn't show well against Kansas. They don't look great.

RE: Cincinnati at #7 Kansas Game Thread - UCGrad1992 - 01-22-2024 07:22 PM

Jay Bilas in the house.

RE: Cincinnati at #7 Kansas Game Thread - Bear Catlett - 01-22-2024 07:51 PM

The ESPN studio crew previewing our game during the break said they were going to cover what Kansas had to do tonight. Didn't even mention who Kansas was playing.

OK, I see. That's good. Just keep talking about Kansas buffoons.

RE: Cincinnati at #7 Kansas Game Thread - Cat-Man - 01-22-2024 09:08 PM

IMO Jay Bilas is one of the smartest guys in C-bball. Going to be interesting to hear his insights about UC's play and coaching. Although I hope he isn't biased because he's a Duke guy and Wes is a UNC guy.

Bad news: Missed our first layup.

Good news: Lakhin gets rebound and puts it in.

RE: Cincinnati at #7 Kansas Game Thread - Bruce Monnin - 01-22-2024 09:11 PM

Lukosius 0-4 at start.
