OPENING KICK
• Navy and North Texas meet on the gridiron for the second time, and the first as American Athletic Conference foes, when the two square off on CBS Sports Network Saturday afternoon (3:30 pm) at Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis. Saturday’s contest is presented by Boeing.
• Navy won the first meeting against North Texas 74-62 on Nov 10, 2007 in Denton. At the time, it was the most points scored in a regulation game in FBS history. The record was broken in 2016 when Pitt beat Syracuse 76-61. That Navy-North Texas game also marked the last time a Navy football game wasn’t on some form of television (either over the air or streaming).
• The Mids will play the longest regular-season schedule in the country this year. Navy played the nation’s first regularseason college football game of the year against Notre Dame on August 26 at Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland and will play the final regular-season game of the year on Dec. 9 vs. Army at Gillette Stadium in New England.
• Navy is trying to return to the dominance it once held at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The Mids were 73-20 (.785) at home from 2003-19, before going 4-12 (.250) at home from 2020-22. Navy is 1-1 (.500) this year on the hallowed ground of Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
• Navy enters the weekend ranked fifth in the nation in rushing (227.5 yds/gm), while the North Texas defense is 130th against the run (241.8 yds/gm).
• North Texas is #1 in the country in kickoff return defense, giving up just 2.5 yards per return.
• Navy is #2 in the country in punt returns (25.5 yds/return), while North Texas is seventh in punt return defense (0.0).
• North Texas is #12 in the country in red zone offense (.947), while Navy is 120th (.714).

SCOUTING NORTH TEXAS
2-2 Overall | 0-0 AAC
Head Coach: Eric Morris
• North Texas enters Saturday’s contest against the Mids with a 2-2 record and winners of two-straight games.
• This will be UNT’s first American Athletic Conference contest.
• North Texas started the year with losses to Cal (58-21) and at Florida International (46-39), but has bounced back with wins at Louisiana Tech (40-37) and against Abilene Christian (45-31).
• UNT’s fortunes changed when they switched to Southern Miss transfer Chandler Rogers at quarterback. Rogers has started the last two games, both wins, and has completed 61 of his 99 pass attempts for 845 yards with 7 touchdowns and just 1 interception. Rogers was one of the most highlycoveted quarterbacks in the transfer portal last year.
• Roderic Burns leads North Texas in receiving with 20 catches for 215 yards, but the big-play target has been Missouri transfer Ja’Mori Maclin, who has 13 catches for 348 yards and 5 touchdowns. Maclin’s 26.8 yards per catch is the third-best average in the country, while his 5 touchdown catches rank 12th nationally.
• North Texas is also dangerous on the ground, led by Harding transfer Ayo Adeyi. Adeyi has rushed for 292 yards and 2 touchdowns on just 42 carries, while Oscar Adaway III has 148 yards and 1 touchdown on 42 carries. Adeyi’s 6.95 yards per carry ranks 12th best in the country.
• The North Texas offense is ranked 12th in the country in red zone offense (.947) and 20th in total offense (466.2).
• Kicker Noah Rauschenberg, a Baylor transfer, ranks 16th in the country in field goals per game (1.75), 23rd in field goal percentage (.875) and 24th in scoring (9.2).
• The North Texas defense is led by safety Logan Wilson (26 tackles, 1 PBU, 1 forced fumble), a two-time transfer from Kansas State and Louisiana-Monroe and safety Patrick Smith (23 tackles, 1 PBU).
• North Texas has 47 transfers on its roster, including 12 new additions this year.

REVISITING THE LEGENDARY 2007 NAVY-NORTH TEXAS GAME
• Navy trailed by as many as 18 points on 5 different occasions, but rallied to defeat North Texas 74-62 in front of 26,012 fans in Denton, Texas. The 136 points was a record total in regulation, a record that stood until 2016 Pitt 76 - Syracuse 61, which was surpassed last year by SMU 77 Houston 63.
• The Mids were coming off an epic 46-44 triple overtime win over Notre Dame in South Bend, which broke the Irish’s 43-game winning streak against Navy, the longest in college football history.
• The two teams combined for an NCAA-record 63 points in the second quarter, as Navy came from 18 points down with 4:12 left in the second quarter (49-31) to cut the UNT lead to 4 at 49-45 at the half thanks to a 21-yard touchdown run by Reggie Campbell and a 3-yard touchdown run by Zerbin Singleton.
• Navy would take its first lead of the game early in the third quarter on a 6-yard touchdown run by second-team quarterback Jarod Bryant and then put the game away in the fourth with a safety and a 73-yard free kick return by Campbell. Bryant entered the game after starting quarterback Kaipo-Noa Kaheaku-Enhada left the game with a bruised knee.
• North Texas quarterback Giovanni Vizza threw 8 touchdown passes in the game, an NCAA record for a freshman.
• Navy finished the day with 680 yards of total offense, while North Texas had 635. The Mids ran for 572 yards, while North Texas threw for 478.
• Shun White led the Navy ground attack with 131 yards and a touchdown on just 7 carries, while Singleton finished with 103 yards and 3 touchdowns on 8 carries.

GAME DAY TIMELINE
• 1:05-1:15 pm - The Navy football team will arrive at the Blue Angel on the West (Blue) side of the stadium. The team will walk down the sidewalk and through NavyFest before walking to the tunnel. Fans are invited to stand on both sides of the sidewalk to cheer on the players.
• 3:11 pm - March-on of the Brigade of Midshipmen
• 3:21:30 pm - National Anthem, followed by a flyover
• Saturday’s flyover will feature two Boeing F/A-18F Super Hornets from the “Red Rippers” of Strike Fighter Squadron ELEVEN based out of Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia Beach, Va. Aircrew for the lead aircraft will be Lt. Cmdr. Timothy “TEDDY” Nasta (29th Company, Class of 2010) and Lt. Trent “MISO” Hori (20th Company, Class of 2018). Aircrew of the wing aircraft will be Lt. The squadron’s mission, as part of Carrier Air Wing One, is to serve at the tip of the sword for the Carrier Strike Group to include air superiority, strike, maritime superiority, as well as close air support in defense of our nation’s interests.
• 3:28:20 pm - Navy will take the field with North Texas to follow
• 3:32 pm - Kickoff / please note there is a chance the timeline, starting with the March-On, will be pushed back 5 minutes if the first game on CBS Sports Network runs long. That decision will be made prior to the 60-minute clock starting.
• 1st/2nd Quarter Break - The 2022 men’s and women’s cross country teams, as well as the 2023 men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track & field teams will be honored. All six programs won Patriot League Championships and all six defeated Army to win the N-Star.
• Halftime - The Naval Academy Drum and Bugle Corps will perform
• 3rd/4th Quarter Break - The pilots from the pregame flyover will be recognized
• Postgame - Navy’s alma mater, Navy Blue & Gold, will be played as the team stands at attention in front of the Brigade of Midshipmen. It is one of the best traditions in all of sports.

Tough game to pick, but Navy is home and the offense is always hard to stop

RE: *** Official North Texas at Navy Game Thread *** - Side.Show.Joe - 10-02-2023 07:38 PM

I was at that Navy @ North Texas game back in 2007. It was the most incredible display of offense I've ever seen in person (UNT through the air and Navy on the ground). And it was also the most horrific excuse for defense by both teams. Lots of offensive records were set in that game. Giovanni Visa set an NCAA freshman record by throwing 8 TDs in that game. I believe that record still stands.

On a side note.... that Mendoza defense was the worst UNT defense in recent memory. Maybe the worst in our entire history.... Until this season's defense. UNT has a very good offense and could be even better if they didn't have to slow down and keep our defense on the sideline.

North Texas will not be able to stop Navy's rushing attack. But, I don't think Navy will be able to stop UNT's balanced offense either. I would not be surprised if Saturday's game sets a new record for combined scoring all over again.

Just thinking - this is the first of the new additions to visit Annapolis.

Any board posters planning the trip?

I can dig up old posts on how to see the sights and spend your money.

If your team hasn't seen the triple option before, they're in for a challenge. It took us a few tries.

Our run defense is the worst in the nation. It wouldn't matter how many times they've seen the triple option. Our only hope is to outscore Navy. This should be 2007 (Navy 74 UNT 62) all over again. If you like offense, tune in. There should be plenty in this game.
