DPOY Discussion, also a poll....top candidates on paper. Same as the OPOY discussion, if you think it's "other" please make a case...

Owen Porter Marshall 9.5 sacks, 14 TFL

TJ Jackson Troy 8 sacks, 14.5 TFL

Jason Henderson Old Dominion 185 Tackles

He doesn't have the stats to win it, but one guy I've just gotta mention is James Carpenter. Our entire front seven was incredible all year, but I think he's the guy that really holds it all together and has just been huge both in making plays of his own and making it possible for his teammates.

Interesting...is he coming back?

I voted for Owen Porter here. He's our glue guy rusher
..

But I can absolutely see TJ Jackson from Troy win it, as he's the glue guy rusher on a championship caliber team.

I'm very much being a homer but Henderson been a monster out there all year, every game. Even when hobbled.

Marshall rotates too much to win many individual defensive awards. Porter essentially sits out every other possession. He played more today because of injuries.

It's interesting. He's got a lot of counting stat tackles. But not a lot of TFL's...

What gives? Is he just a cover LB? Off ball only?

He's got two more years so I sure hope so. Hopefully no P5 draws him in with their milkshakes.

I think the people voting though would know he's a dude.

My vote is Carlton Martial.

RE: 2022 Sun Belt Conference DPOY Discussion - warhawk09 - 11-26-2022 10:03 PM

Carlton Martial wins this award

RE: 2022 Sun Belt Conference DPOY Discussion - CardinalBlackTrojan - 11-26-2022 10:04 PM

I think Troy LB Carlton Martial will undoubtedly be considered.

* He is #2 in the nation in total tackles (behind #1 Jason Henderson)
* Broke the NCAA career tackles record this season
* Burlsworth Trophy finalist

I can't understand how it couldn't be Carlton Martial.

Mostly but that's just the scheme i guess. We don't rush LBs much but with our line we didn't have to.

I thought about putting him up there. Dude is a beast. Too bad his size will limit his opportunity for the NFL.

Just a stud.

So Troy fans, you would have him above TJ? The pass rushers tend to get the love...

I trust your opinion...

Do you have a link to where you got that information (bold print above) from? The national link I found (1st link below) shows Jason Henderson leading the nation by a comfortable margin with a UCONN player (Jackson Mitchell 133 tackles) #2.

The 1st link below shows Henderson with 164 tackles (not including today where he is credited with having 18) and is from The Football Database. That would give him 182 total tackles this season. It also shows Carlton Marshall with 106 tackles (not including today's game) and has him at the time tied for 12th nationally this season.

The 2nd link below shows Henderson with 186 tackles this season, includes today's game, and is from the ODU Sports web site.

The 3rd link below shows Carlton Martial with 112 tackles this season, appears to include today's game and is from the Troy Sports web page. To be near the top of the national list at all means he should be considered in this poll in my opinion.

Henderson also set a Sun Belt conference record with his tackle totals this season and is leading the nation by a significant margin. Prior to him getting injured and going out very early in the game last week in Boone, he was on pace to break (former Carolina Panther) Luke Kuechly's NCAA D1 national record of 191 tackles in a season set in 2011.

Carlton Martial was best I saw all year.

RE: 2022 Sun Belt Conference DPOY Discussion - lelandhardy - 11-27-2022 01:45 AM

First of all, the fact no Georgia Southern players are on here is appalling. 126th rank defense and not one is on here? Pffttt... Could never happen.

I used to have the NCAA individual (season) stat leaders page bookmarked but I no longer do.
I'll see of I can re-find it tomorrow. It's kind of a PITA navigating the NCAA site to find those.

Spot on.

James Carpenter (known locally as JC) is the man behind the #1 run defense in all of FBS football. Got a big sack yesterday against CC. As a NT/DT he’s not going to rack up impressive tackle or sack numbers, but he’s the best at what he does in the SBC.
