OT: Structure collapse at FIU - Toledo Football 1st - 03-15-2018 02:32 PM

A new pedestrian bridge under construction over Tamiami Trail has collapsed over the highway. There are fatalities.

The 950 ton span was prefabricated and set in place this past weekend.

Not sure how long this link will be active:

The cars are absolutely flattened by the bridge, and there's a lot of cars. How in the world does this happen???

From what I've heard, the pedestrian bridge was put into place on Saturday and not open to the public. Structure tests were being done today. A cable snapped and pancaked the structure on the traffic below. Seems like it could have been even worse.

What brain tool does structure tests, while traffic is running under a bridge? This is going into the Tacoma Narrows History books. Prayers for the souls, what else can you do?

after it happened, you can only hope no one suffered. They have said 6 people are known to be dead, with 5 of them still under the collapsed bridge. Getting to them will take a long time.

From what I have heard on the news this morning, the engineers stated the cables had come loose and they were asking for them to be tightened down again. Before that happened, the bridge collapsed. With hindsight being 20-20, just looking at that bridge makes you wonder how it could have been safe. A lot of weight and not much structure seemed to be in place to hold it up.

Like someone said earlier, traffic should have been re-routed until the structure was safely in place.
