That is one messed-up region.

Trying to see the downside of them killing each other off.

Pretty sure that happens annually.

I'd be very, very, surprised if Syria doesn't back down. They have been very judicious about not overextending themselves, and I'm not sure how Turkey's entrance to the north works against their interests. The only thing I can see is that the Syrians want the Kurds strong enough to suppress Sunnis if they become a problem again. The Kurds effectively act as a buffer between Turkish and Syrian forces... the Kurds may be relatively agnostic to the Assad regime - I don't think they like the Assads, but the Assad family has allowed them semi-autonomy for a long time.

Israel recently signaled they would not allow (or try not to) Iran to have a permanent presence in Syria... Russia failed in its probe of American forces (yes, I know that they weren't regular Russian forces). I don't see Syria in a position to essentially open another front.

Syria supports the Kurds? Lol. I like to think I kinda keep up with what’s going on there—but the ever shifting alliances mixed with changing leadership in nations makes it impossible (at least for me).

Syria is incapable of waging a meaningful war at all against another country.

The only reason Assad and the regime still exist is that Russia is propping them up. Syria is a pile of rubble today.

Which would be worse, Assad, or a bunch of mullahs taking over power in Syria? The choices there really suck.

Who cares, let the European Union figure it out. Merkel is the leader of the free world and we dont matter anymore, amirite.

Actually, I'm not at all certain that the best answer for our purposes wouldn't be ISIS. At least there would be somebody in between the mullahs and Assad who hate them both.

I'm wondering what we really have to gain in Syria beyond blocking the implementation of a Russian pipeline through the region. I don't even think we NEED the Middle East anymore for oil production.

We don't. But the rest of the world does. And the rest of the world is counting on us to protect their trade routes for them.

Which - especially in the year 2018 - doesn't say much about international cooperation.

No it doesn't. But it does give us some leverage with China, which has probably the most endangered trade route.

I stand corrected. I guess the Syrians are willing to risk conflict.

If I’m Turkey, I vastly prefer a weak Kurdish state on my border than a Russian proxy state, they should call Ukraine or any Slavic state and ask them how comfortable it is living next to the Russian Bear.

Well that settles it! I was on the fence before but we definitely aren't booking our summer vacation on the Turkey/Syria border now! Better luck next year guys!
