Just makes you wonder why the Cuse cannot get to heights in FB like the others in the top seven. Guess location.

I looked up Notre Dame's numbers.

ND has a little over $26 million dollar a year athletic department profit/surplus (which goes to the academic side of the university), even without a mega Big Ten or SEC conference television deal.

That is strong

Some of the numbers look weird. E.g., they have FSU at $144 million. That's top-level SEC territory. To my knowledge, FSU has never had revenue of more than about $115m in a year.

A report from June, 2017 says their 2016-2017 revenue was $113.7m:

The data in the OPs link is referring to this Department of Education database. You can get more detail at the link above for any school. The problem is that there isn't a whole lot of rigor around this type of reporting, if I'm looking at the database correctly there isn't a single school that reports a loss on athletics and the vast majority of the respondents have total revenue = total expenses.

RE: Revenue Rankings 16-17 - Stugray2 - 02-07-2018 08:12 PM

It should be noted that the DoE numbers do not measure revenues by source. So a loan or payment from the Institution to the Athletic Department, or student fees are lumped in with gate and TV as generic revenue. So a $12M Football budget as some G5 school will show $12M in revenue, even if actual gate and other revenue was just $4M. Also a huge cots of programs is hidden under "no specific sport" category. To get a WAG of the actual costs of a sport, I like to take the percentage of scholarship athletes. So if a School has 240 and 80 are Football, I apply 1/3rd of the "no specific sport" overhead to them. Mind you it's low estimate, as lower socioeconomic students eat up much more of the support costs. Also Football has a huge facilities costs that is often hidden in that general "no specif" sport category.

All I'm trying to say is not all costs are in the buckets we'd like them to be in to get a real costs and revenue picture. But believe me, 80% of the schools have that breakdown for executive eyes only.

Location and they really don't have a ton of the frivolous BS most of the really big FB schools spend on wowing and spoiling the recruits and players.

A small liberal art school in my city makes $10 million in revenue from athletics? They are division 2. They have no football team, only a basketball team along with 20 other sports such as golf, rowing, etc. I don't buy these numbers.

What school? Maybe a big part of the revenue is from student fees

All it takes is a big donation. 3 years ago Oregon was the leader with something like 180 million. Last year it was Texas A&M at 194 million (including stadium renovation donations). This year Texas knocked it out of the park.

But for the most part the averages stayed about equal distance from one another year over year.

The PAC gained 2 million on the SEC and Big 10 and 3 million over the Big 12 and ACC as their average payout per school rose from 89 million to 97 million. The ACC and Big 12 both gained 5 million over last year roughly. The ACC went from 87 million to 92 and the Big 12 went from 102 million to 107 million. The Big 10 and the SEC each earned 6 million more in this report and gained 1 million on the Big 12 and ACC while losing 2 million in advantage over the PAC. The Big 10 rose to 115 million and the SEC to 127 million per school payout.

FWIW, I don't believe for a minute that FSU generated $144m in athletic revenue. Neither they nor any other ACC team has ever come within $30m of that.

I'd need more evidence to believe that. 07-coffee3

All you have to do is use the link and look it up. But it just takes one 20 million dollar donation to put them there. They earned 123 million last year.
