Scott Filip at A&M indoor track meet - Fort Bend Owl - 02-02-2018 07:21 PM
Filip is competing in the heptathlon this weekend in his first extensive competition of the 2018 indoor track and field season. He should be a real contender for the NCAA individual titles this year in both the heptathlon (indoors) and decathlon (outdoors). At least I think that's the case - maybe there is some guy out there who is heads and tails above him but there probably aren't many, if any.
Good competition this weekend at College Station too. Lindon Victor is a former Olympian and NCAA champion for A&M and is competing unattached, although he may have already dropped out of the meet. Another ex-collegian - Devon Williams - is there; Williams competed for the USA team last year at the World Championships in the Decathlon.
And I'm pretty sure A&M has a decent current collegian in the competition too, so it should be a good test for Filip.

The final event of the first day, the high jump, is still going on. The bar is still a little low at 1.88 meters (6' 2").
Rice's DMR (women) was third in 11:49.66, running their best of the year and #1 in C-USA.
Elsa Racasan (3:33.79), Akuira Young (57.79), Hannah Bablak (2:16.39) Khayla Patel (5:01.69) --> 1200/400/800/1600.

Lourdes Vivas (freshman) just finished 5th in the 5,000 meters with a lifetime best of 17:22.08. That time is #2 in C-USA.

In the men's 5,000, junior Adolfo Carvalho was 4th in 14:56.13, while freshman Hociel Landa broke 15 minutes (barely) in 14:59.99, while finishing 6th. Those rank as #3 and #4, respectively, in C-USA.

Scott cleared 1.94 (6' 4¼"), while Charlie cleared 1.97 (6' 5½") before going out.

Both Owls miss their first attempts at 4.25 meters (13' 11¼") but Scott clears on his 2nd try. Charlie with a big clearance on his 2nd attempt.

No more bars cleared. Not a good meet for Scott in the high jump or pole vault. Bloom of Cincinnati has closed the gap to just 38 points going into the final event, the 1000 meter run.

Rice finished 4-8-9 in the men's weight throw (Michael Yow, Uche Ugwunze, and Matt Garcia). Garcia had a personal best.

Freshman Mary Clare Neal, a true walk-on, was the highest Rice finisher (11th) in the mile (5:05.64).

Matthew Murray finished 2nd in the mile (4:07.24). He's now#4 in C-USA.

Scott with a nice 2:43.66 to win the heptathlon 1,000 meters. Credit to Alex Bloom (Cincinnati) for taking it out hard trying to finish ahead of Scott in the final standings.
