A little surprised Troy was picked 7th overall considering we get back almost all of our starting lineup, including one of the best pitchers in the Sun Belt in Andrew Crane. Plus a few of the players were All-Sun Belt.

This is coaches voting, so I would be surprised as well since you were about .500 last year. Maybe others are in a similar situation with returners.

Should be an interesting season for Troy... will probably be one of the toughest schedules in the country.

On top of the SBC schedule, which is always an RPI boost... we play #5 Florida State (three-game series), #15 Mississippi State, Auburn (twice), Alabama (once), Tennessee Tech (who finished 41-21 last season), along with the typically good-but-not-great teams like UAB, Jacksonville State, Samford, and Alabama State.

We're 8th, which is probably fair. I do think we have more potential than usual this year though. All comes down to whether or not we can figure the pitching situation out.

Take a look at the Cajuns schedule this year. I think I heard Coach Robichaux reference RPI, or RIP?

That is certainly a tough schedule.

After looking at everyone's schedules, I'd say the Top 5 toughest schedules in no particular order are:

Louisiana
South Alabama
Troy
Coastal Carolina
Texas-Arlington

I think Troy is a team to watch out for this year. Their pitching will keep them in almost every game and I expect their offense to improve. If their offense takes a step forward, they will be a contender this year.

UTA second in the West? The this year has gone for our sports programs, I'd buy second to last before I'd go that high.

It has its moments, but there is nothing like watching Coastal beat P5 schools in Springs Brooks Stadium.

We got the Cajuns, Chants, Eagles and both Trojans in Boone. We'll beat someone. And they'll be really mad.

And lo did the Korner rejoice.

Couldn't see where this was posted anywhere on the conference site, but I found it on the GS athletics site.
Kind of surprising the Cajuns have one player and Coastal none.
The lineup looks like it's all guys from the Texas and Alabama teams.

2018 Preseason All-Sun Belt Conference Baseball Team
Andrew Crane (Troy, Senior, Starting Pitcher)
Trae Patterson (UTA, Senior, Starting Pitcher)
Seth Shuman (Georgia Southern, Sophomore, Starting Pitcher)
Dylan Moore (Louisiana, Senior, Relief Pitcher)
Will Olson (UTA, Junior, Catcher)
Wells Davis (South Alabama, Junior, First Base)
Jonathan Ortega (Texas State, Junior, Second Base)
Drew LaBounty (South Alabama, Senior, Shortstop)
Jaylen Hubbard (Texas State, Junior, Third Base)
Brendan Donovan (South Alabama, Junior, Outfielder)
Brandon Lockridge (Troy, Junior, Outfielder)
Travis Swaggerty (South Alabama, Junior, Outfielder)
Omar Salinas (UTA, Senior, Designated Hitter)
Dylan Paul (Texas State, Senior, Utility Player)

2018 Preseason Player of the Year
Travis Swaggerty (South Alabama, Junior, Outfielder)

2018 Preseason Pitcher of the Year
Andrew Crane (Troy, Senior, Starting Pitcher)

Yep, Cajuns and Chanticleer's will have down years so neither of us will have a shot. Poor hitting and pitching will plague us throughout the year. 03-thumbsup

I realize that you're being facetious, but your friends here in South Texas will hope that your prognostication is spot on. 04-cheers

RE: Jags, Cajuns Picked to Win Respective Divisions For Baseball - chiefsfan - 01-31-2018 09:48 PM

It seems like every year the SBC Preseason All Baseball team is almost always represented by players from roughly 5 teams.

This year:

UTA
Texas State
South
Troy

Southern and the Cajuns managed to get one player each.

Not saying those aren't All conference performers, it's just I cannot honestly believe that the top 15 players in the conference come from the same 4 teams.

RE: Jags, Cajuns Picked to Win Respective Divisions For Baseball - EigenEagle - 01-31-2018 10:09 PM

I think it's dumb to have one player at each non-pitcher position. Just put the best nine hitters on the team and maybe have a Conference "Golden Glove" award or something.
