Off the beaten path - Austin College and Penn St-Behrens join MPSF men's water polo - NoDak - 01-23-2018 10:06 PM

The Big West formation of their own water polo league and Cal Baptist dropping the sport makes PAC12 school beg for conference rivals across the country. It is a MPSF label, but PAC12 schools, as Austin College ( Sherman, TX) and Penn St-Behren (near Erie) join UCLA, USC, Stanford, and Cal.

The power of an autobid requiring six schools for non-major sports sometimes forces strange alliances.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the MPSF track and field arrangement? There are multiple leagues who could have T&F in house but don't.

Big West doesn't sponsor men's water polo.

Thought they announced it was coming. Or was it just womens.?

Water polo seems like a mess on the men's side. The Golden Coast and the Westen Water Polo Association get bids, and many of them have exited the MPSF. Seems like the PAC12 has fomented rebellion on the West Coast. The Big West now has enough teams to sponsor it, but they do not.

Gannon, Mercyhuest and MeKendree are in the Women's WWPA against a bunch of Calfornia schools.

This is just silly. Expand the NCAA tournament from 6 teams to 8 teams and make an exception for the MPSF: they got an automatic bid despite being only a 4-team conference. They're certainly worthy of the exception: it's been TWENTY years since a non-MPSF team has won the NCAA title!

I'm not trying to degrade PSU-Behrend water polo, as I'm sure they're trying. But they're simply nowhere near the level of the MPSF schools, and likely never will be. PSU-Behrend played 3 games against MPSF foes in 2017 and lost by scores of 17-2, 15-0 and 27-3.

I think that is only for 2018. We'll see

BW sponsors women's water polo. UC San Diego will be the 7th member for that sport. On the men's side here are only five.

UCSD got previous affiliate admission to the Big West for men's volleyball, not men's water polo.

I wish we could convince two more Pac-12 members to fund water polo teams.

The Big West just needs one affiliate and they could have their own men's water polo conference.

They could make an offer to the Air Force Academy and/or SJSU, while Pacific and Pepperdine join their WCC comrades Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara in the WWPA.

I thought of the same thing, but forget Air Force, due to travel outside California (costs, this is not a revenue sport). AF are with Denver in the WWPA anyway. I am a little surprise SJSU's men are not in the MPSF with the same Pac-12 school's their women compete in MPSF with (Cal, Stanford, USC, UCLA, plus ASU women and for now CSUB).

Actually the Pac-12 should sponsor for women's water polo and just absorb the MPSF. SJSU would never leave as an affiliate, for the same reasons SDSU doesn't intend to leave P12 men's soccer, and they'd be set at 6.

The WCC is not far either with UOP, Pepperdine (Men's only), SCU and LMU. Especially with Cal Baptist sponsoring both men's and women's, a natural fit. Air Force men are stretch, but not too bad. After that they need a 5th & 6th women's somewhere. (see note below about Tournament only schools ... D-II Asuza Pacific makes sense and ???)

Note on Penn State Behrend. They did not play a single regular season game against P12 schools in the MPSF; they only participate in the tournament. I suspect the same will be true for Austin College. It's just for the 6 minimum AQ requirement.
