Kent State @ Toledo - fallsdog - 01-19-2018 09:45 AM

The Flashes head to Toledo on Saturday night to take on the Rockets. UT enters the contest on top of the MAC West at 12-6 overall with a 4-1 conference record. After dropping an exhibition game to the Findlay Oilers, the Rockets defeated Saint Joes and Penn and lost to Syracuse, Kansas and Cornell in notable non conference play. Their lone MAC loss was to Buffalo.

Toledo has four double digit scorers led by Colorado transfer Tre'Shaun Fletcher. The 6'7 senior is averaging 18 points and 8 rebounds per game and also leads the team in steals and assists. Junior Guard Jaelen Sanford is averaging 16 points per game, 6'8 junior Nate Navigato notches 13 a game and 6'11 sophomore Luke Knape comes of the bench with 10 points and 6 boards a night.

The projected starting lineup looks like this:

G - Fletcher
G- Mareon Jackson (Fr)
G- Sanford
F- Navigato
F - Taylor Adway (6'9 Senior)

The Rockets seem to have a little bit of everything. This would be a nice road win for the Flashes who will no doubt be tested in the paint by Toledo.

GO FLASHES!

To me this is kind of a measuring stick game. Toledo looks like the best team outside of Buffalo. Win or take it down to the wire and I think we'll be poised to make a run. Lose without really threatening and we're still looking like a middle of he packer.

I agree with that 100%. The fact that it is a road game ups the ante a bit too. UT should have a decent crowd tonight considering students are back on campus, the team's success so far and there are no NFL games tonight.

For my money this is as excited about a game as I have been all season. Therefore the tired old "games don't matter until March" argument doesn't hold water with me.

Speaking of Buffalo...they just keep rolling over MAC teams whether the game is at Alumni Arena or not. Their RPI is 25, which is a nice feather in the cap of an otherwise lackluster MAC this season (no offense Toledo).

RE: Kent State @ Toledo - anti-zip - 01-20-2018 11:01 AM

That's interesting that buffalo is so high on RPI. The MAC as a whole scheduled poorly which resulted in everyone having at least 7 or 8 non conference wins. That's a good way to trick RPI as a conference because you won't have any opponents that have low win totals in conference. Buffalo is much lower on the ratings that aren't as short sighted as RPI (74th on kenpom and 95th on BPI). So probably the first time this could ever be said... The MAC would benefit from RPI being cared about more. Unfortunately in recent years it seems like the selection committee has got smarter and used better ranking systems.

Wow didn't realize we're only 1-5 on the road. 2-7 if you count neutral court games. Need to start getting that figured out.

I wonder when the last time KSU was a 12 point underdog in a MAC game? Has to be a long, long time.

RE: Kent State @ Toledo - anti-zip - 01-20-2018 07:22 PM

Dangerous spot here. If we don't start getting them off the offensive glass and turning it over this one will turn into a laugher real quick.

RE: Kent State @ Toledo - anti-zip - 01-20-2018 07:32 PM

So much for the rule of verticality on that one...

RE: Kent State @ Toledo - Old School Flash - 01-20-2018 07:43 PM

Terrible play from ADR and Pippen. Totally outclassed. Walker only thing going so far...

RE: Kent State @ Toledo - anti-zip - 01-20-2018 07:56 PM

Strong finish to the half. Great shooting by Walker so far. Pretty classless comment by the Toledo announcer on espn3 after the confrontation at the end of the half. "He's got no business being at the rockets bench so if something bad happens to him so be it.". Insinuating physical harm should come to Walker for jawing with their bench? And you don't even know who said what? Get freaking real man.

Don't know if the Toledo players on the bench started the mouthing but that's the type of thing we've seen from Walker over and over. Absolutely no reason for him to stand at the Toledo bench. Go about your business young man!

Yeah no kidding and I'm pretty sure the ESPN3 announcers are supposed to be 100 percent unbiased.

The ESPN3 announcers will most likely never be unbiased. They are all employees of the home school which is producing the broadcast.

RE: Kent State @ Toledo - JimJoyce - 01-20-2018 08:23 PM

Not necessarily.

RE: Kent State @ Toledo - anti-zip - 01-20-2018 08:33 PM

Wow, whistles not going our way in the second half. 7-2 on fouls right now. That last one one Pippen looked like a complete phantom call.

RE: Kent State @ Toledo - anti-zip - 01-20-2018 08:39 PM

That was some bush league bs. I can't believe we got a tech for that. And the clown announcer says he has every right to do that but Walker was out of line?

RE: Kent State @ Toledo - JimJoyce - 01-20-2018 09:11 PM

Will never understand it. They call a beauty of a first half with only 7 fouls then call everything in the second half. And UT's coach is still an ahole.

RE: Kent State @ Toledo - anti-zip - 01-20-2018 09:16 PM

Ugh frustrating down the stretch but a good game in general. If we play like that every game we'll be ok. That technical foul was a huge moment in the game. It went from a 3 point lead to a one point deficit on that play. It's tough without knowing if something was said, but Avery generally is not a chatty player. The video was pretty clear though. A Toledo player pushing his way into the middle of the Kent State huddle and continuing to push his way in as they move. Finally after they get him out and he tries to push back in, Avery puts his forearm in his chest to hold him out (not even aggressive contact). And the result is a technical on us. I have no problem with the way Avery responded. That's absolute bush league and I would be embarrassed if a Kent player did that. It's really tough that something like that would cost us. I'd like to say keep your composure and don't let them bait you like that, but like I said, I think Avery responded appropriately. That's just tough. The 17-9 foul differential really hurt too.

Was the Toledo player trying to get to the FT line as he was the one who was fouled and next up to shoot his FT's? If he was, then he does have the right to position himself at the line and KSU should have moved their huddle. Most times the FT shooter will simply wait a few moments for the opposing huddle to break up. With all the barking that went on up to that point, don't imagine either team was going to display much sportsmanship...

I'm just reading up on the game. I had to check scores last night. Sounds like the second game the refs called far from even against us. Is this becoming a trend for some reason?
