As they should. Trussville got tired of Clay Chalkville whipping them in football.

No need in Trussville benefiting by playing other sports against Clay.

Would it have anything to do with Hewitt-Trussville getting a group of big time transfers, after all of Clays playmakers moved on to college?

If I've learned anything in life it's that the richer and bigger a high school gets, the less the adults within the system act like adults

Some background that might explain this decision:

-In 2016, Hewitt Coach Josh Floyd made the decision to stop playing Clay in football, a rivalry that had been played nearly every year since Clay opened. Some perfunctory reasons were given, but ultimately it came down to that Floyd was tired of having his rear end whupped every year by a school that was smaller and less moneyed. Those characteristics were specifically a problem because they conflicted with the new, "elite" image he was trying to cultivate around the program (complete with an expensive new stadium).

-Following ending the rivalry, Floyd proceeded to assemble the easiest schedule he could find (along with the AHSAA happening to move them to an easier region in Huntsville) and proceeded to bring in "class" after class of recruits from other high schools every year. Hewitt has won a lot of regular season games with this approach, but has been smacked every year in the playoffs.

-This approach has generated a lot of acrimony in the Birmingham area, mostly because "friends of the program" for Hewitt have been in the ear of every decent high school prospect from Clay, CenterPoint, Mountain Brook, Pleasant Grove, Hoover, you name it, trying to get them to transfer to Trussville. Trussville had almost ten kids transfer in for football last season.

Thus, people are tired of it. Clay is not the only school who has caught Hewitt doing this and is fed up. Clay's principal said something on twitter a few weeks ago that was a thinly veiled shot at Hewitt and what they have been doing. So whatever reasons Clay may give for this move, I believe its solely to send a message that the cheating will no longer be tolerated.

I think its great and that other schools should follow suit. The AHSAA is useless in fighting this kind of stuff, so its up to the schools to self-police.

Mountain Brook has been stacking in hoops for quite a while.

There are some others in the area that also tend to recruit recruits for their school.

Yeah, Mountain Brook got a taste of their own medicine the last two years when Hewitt plucked two starting quarterbacks from them for two straight years in a row.

The fact that high schools are recruiting athletes is kind of dumb. No, it's really dumb.

We are totally lost as a people at this point

As a HT alum and former HT football player I support Clay's decision. Oh and Coach Woods was a walking piece of fecal matter.

Look, it happens. I remember several years ago there was a guy who was in the Air Force who had a couple of sons who were studs. He was stationed at Maxwell, but chose to live in Hoover so his sons could play ball there. There was also a very successful coach who did the same type thing at one of the large schools in the northern suburbs of Montgomery. He was so successful he went on to be a head coach at a D-I college school...

Several years ago, Mailon Kent, Sr (former AU QB) wanted his son (M.K. Jr) to play on a state championship BB contending team. He brought in two players from Jefferson Christian Academy by providing apartment accommodations for their families in Mountain Brook (he owned the units) so their sons could play for the school. One of the two later signed with MS State. M.K., Jr went on to AU but not as an athlete.

Tyus Boswell was one of them. Went to Moo U.

The other at one point flirted with UAB but I don't think had the grades.

Just a guess, but I definitely think this move had more to do with making a statement about Hewitt's football recruiting than it did anything else. Word is that Hewitt has several new additions, including the Florence running back that gained nearly 400 yards against them in the regular season finale.

The point of my observation was that wealthy neighborhoods / school districts can use that wealth to recruit the better players who might otherwise play for less endowed schools. It works the same way in college level sports in that wealthy programs can provide greater creature comforts than their "poor relations".

My father knew, and had a great dislike for, the guy who'd recruited them to JCA in the first place. Dude was livid to have them "stolen" from him.

Was trying to recall the JCA recruiter's name and hit on this old thread. Seems some things never change (in this case, it was Clay-Chalkville doing the recruiting):
