Nicknames are suspicious says Rafael Cruz.

It is going to get worse. Beto is going to have a fun time dealing with his mom's issues with money laundering (and maybe tax evasion). The political stage of Texas is *not* that of El Paso, where certain things kind of continuously get overlooked.

RE: Texas Senate Race - tanqtonic - 03-07-2018 12:46 PM

As for Beto's nickname, I have no problem with it. I have known the O'Rourke family since I was a kid. I do find it interesting that Beto highlights the name, but not surprising given the electorate of his Congressional District. And he made the 'highlight' even more conspicuous and prominent after he came back to El Paso from Columbia University and started in his political career running for El Paso City council.

But I find it rather hilarious that a 4th generation pure Irish boy highlights the 'Beto'. But he really had to do that to beat Silvestro Reyes in an El Paso US Congressional primary race. Hate to say it, but a Robert O'Rourke running against Silvestro Reyes would have a hugely different outcome.

I just wish my family had called me "Huerito" continuously from being a kid.

I presumed he was like me - of mixed heritage - until I looked him up in in Wiki. I don't blame him if he uses the "Beto", especially if it really is the everyday name used by friends and family.

In my case, my Grandfather, a transplanted New Yorker, wanted to name his (half-Hispanic) son a name that would not translate into Spanish, and did so. Since I am a "Jr,", neither does my name. It does not even lend itself to a "beto" type of nickname.

Im lucky my nickname isnt "vato".

I enjoyed Beto's SXSW interview calling for a ban on AR-15s and other assault rifles. I am wondering if he actually understands which state he is running in, though.....

The AR-15 isn't an assault rifle. Beto following Trump's example?

Yeah, I chose not to point out the 'assault rifle' thingy (that I probably screech about way too much.... I think I remember Robert making a comment how the AR-15 was 'specially designed for war' in that same interview, talk about broadcasting ignorance deep *and* wide on the subject matter.....). In that one interview Robert went from a 'maybe I'll look at him' to a myna-bird nfw; he's really got to literally run the table with me to survive his SXSW showing, and I dont think Robert and his 'friends' have that in them platform-wise.

Then I had two volunteers text me last night from Friends of Beto ---- two of them. I told them each that I hated getting political phone calls (from anyone, mind you), and two *texts* in the same night was over the top. Told the second one if I get another text from any 'friend of Beto' I'm going to write a 750 dollar check to the Cruz campaign then and there. Hopefully that will put me on their 'NFW text this wackjob' list.....

Primarily Altruistic Commoner?

I now know what Robert means by no PAC money now.

Using the nonscientific polling method of counting yard signs in my SW Austin neighborhood, Beto will win in a landslide.

Counting yard signs in my neighborhood, it will be a 0-0 tie.

What does President Bernie Sanders have to say about that?

Counting signs in Austin also predicted a Hillary landslide in both the country and in Texas.

Or Governor Davis?

What does President Bernie Sanders have to say about that?

"The system was rigged!"
