It was a fun game to watch, or it was for me in retrospect.

Give Saban credit for the QB change, that lit a fire under the whole game from a neutral viewer POV.

I'm starting to think you really aren't a USF fan.

No, the fake USF fans are those who rooted for UCF to beat Auburn and supported their claim of a national title, and the AAC board is sadly thick with them.

No true USF fan ever wants anything good in football to happen to UCF, and had ratings last night been bad UCF fans and trolls would have acted like that meant the public thought it was because it was an 'NIT' game.

Dumb idea but they woulda said it so i am glad they got slapped, lol.

So they had to have 3 channels to get to the 16.7 rating? Notice that ESPN channel was 16.0.

Was last years game only on ESPN or was it on all 3 ESPN channels? EDIT: Apparently yes as Sportsmedia Watch stated ESPN Mega Cast for the Title Game.

We'll have to see how many viewers that translates into later and what the final rating is going to be.

Not possible; I was told this match up was too regional.

This...

I was also told that legions of G5 fans wouldn't watch.

I wonder, how much, if any, affect the semis not being on NY Eve helped. All the semi-final games saw nice increases this year adn were thus seen by more people My feeling is, more people watched the semis and were therefor more invested and curious to see the final. Truth be told, its impressive that this years rating were higher 2016 because I actually think last year was the more compelling final matchup.

That may play a part in it. However, I don't think 2016 was necessarily a more compelling matchup from a casual fan perspective because it was a rematch (which generally have lower ratings than the first meeting). Plus, while Alabama-Clemson was a matchup between two conferences, it was still a game between two teams from the same South region just as it was this year. Finally, Atlanta is pound-for-pound the #1 TV market for college football. The fact that its de facto home team of Georgia was playing in a championship game (and such game was being held in Atlanta, to boot) could have provided a bump in the ratings in the same manner that having the NYC, Chicago or Boston markets boost World Series ratings when the Yankees, Cubs or Red Sox are participating.

That actually made it feel like a new team took the field after half. It totally changed the dynamics, and made the game fun because you couldn't guess at the playcalling anymore for Alabama.

I think its worth noting that Deshaun Watson was a pretty big story last year and a big part of the draw in last years game. I think going in, he was probably a bigger star than anyone playing in this years game. He was actually one of the main reason I was interested in seeing last years game.

Legions of G5 fans didn't but it didn't really matter otherwise the ratings would have been .5% higher. 03-nutkick 03-lmfao

No, it's just that i see UCF as a rival so don't want anything good coming their way. Do you think there were any Auburn fans rooting for Alabama to beat Clemson last week? Or Michigan fans that were sad that Ohio State missed the playoffs? None that I know of. Rivals come before conferences. I'm very glad that UCF finished no higher than 6th in the final poll and that their bogus natty campaign came to nothing.

I love USF and very much like the competition in the AAC, if we were getting paid $30m a year like a P5 I'd be happy if we stayed there, but since we aren't and won't ever be we have to get out ASAP. I bet 99% of Houston fans feel the same.

I also watch all the bowl games, including all the pre-Christmas G5 games. I bet you didn't but maybe you did. 07-coffee3

Looked like the Auburn game. I told my brother that Hurts was gonna cost Alabama the game. Boom. Change at halftime.

Saban won that game.

I didn't. Yes, Alabama vs Clemson was a compelling rematch because the previous year's game had been so close. But to those who don't have a 'hate' of the SEC, this was a really compelling matchup as well. On one side, you have Alabama, and let's face it, as long as Saban is with Alabama it's like Brady being with the Patriots, they are compelling sports television.

On the other, you had a Georgia team that looked really good. Played a tough schedule, beat Notre Dame in South Bend, blew out Auburn to win the SEC title, then beat Oklahoma in a classic playoff game. They LOOKED like a team that had the athletes to possibly beat Alabama, and crucially, even though it was an SEC matchup, they hadn't played this year, hadn't played in 3 years. So that was very unlike Alabama vs LSU in 2011.

RE: Alabama/Georgia draws massive 16.7 rating, up 9% over last year! - Stugray2 - 01-09-2018 02:08 PM

College football overnight ratings in playoff era:
2015: Ohio State-Oregon (18.8)
2018: Alabama-Georgia (16.7)
2016: Alabama-Clemson (16.0)
2017: Clemson-Alabama (15.3)

Take away, they game draws better TV audience when schools are from different regions. South vs South is less than West vs. Midwest (and probably South vs West or South vs Midwest)

RE: Alabama/Georgia draws massive 16.7 rating, up 9% over last year! - Hokie4Skins - 01-09-2018 02:15 PM

Austin and Columbus, OH had the highest regional ratings outside the SEC for the game.
