what's happened so far - stever20 - 01-08-2018 09:07 AM

I said that the big thing to watch is how teams 5-8(Butler, Marquette, Providence, and St John's) did against top 3 teams(Nova, X, Seton Hall) and bottom 2 teams(Georgetown, DePaul)
Butler- 1-2 vs top 3 teams, 1-0 vs bottom 2
Marquette- 0-2 vs top 3 teams, 1-0 vs bottom 2
Providence- 1-0 vs top 3 teams
St John's- 0-1 vs top 3 teams, 0-1 vs bottom 2
so 5-8 right now are 2-5 vs top 3 teams, and 2-1 vs bottom 2.

If you add in Creighton to the mix- give Providence and St John's a loss so teams 5-8 are only 2-7 vs the top 4 teams.

in another way of looking at it-
Nova- 1-1 vs 5-8
Xavier- 2-1 vs 5-8
Seton Hall- 2-0 vs 5-8
Creighton- 2-0 vs 5-8

Everyone is like you're so wrong, it's been a great start for the league to get a lot of bids. Right now, all that's happened is St John's has been pretty much eliminated, and Butler, Marquette, and Providence have all just maintained- they're no closer to getting a bid than 2 weeks ago.

Still a lot of basketball left, Stever. 04-cheers

There is, but for St John's for instance- it's awfully late now. They are 9-6- and would need to copy that record pretty much rest of the way- with having 7 ranked games left- not to mention both games left with Marquette and Butler- and a game at Providence. It's pretty unrealistic to see them getting 9 wins. The only opponent they have left that doesn't have double digit wins- DePaul(who just crushed them at home).

All I'm saying for Butler, Marquette, and Providence- they really have just maintained what they need to do. It would still be incredibly easy for those 3 to fall off the pace really quickly.

So with what's happened the first third of the conference season- here's my power ratings so far...
1- Villanova- simply the best
2- Seton Hall
3- Creighton
4- Xavier
5- Marquette
6- Providence
7- Butler
8- Georgetown
9- DePaul
10- St John's

amazing to think back to opening night- if that comeback by Butler doesn't happen- Butler is 1-4 right now and in deep trouble.

St. Johns really got hit hard with LoVett. Georgetown has been a pleasant surprise in conference play, after their weak OOC. DePaul hasn't been awful like in years past. The top of the league (Nova, Hall, Creighton and X) have been very good. If they can just beat up the bottom, they not only will get higher bids, but it will also make for an awesome conference tournament. Marquette needs to continue its hot stretch right now. It starts tomorrow against Butler.

yeah think I saw Rothstein was saying they were 6-1 with Lovett and now 4-6 w/o him.

The Marquette/Butler game is huge. It feels like it's a must win for Butler. A Marquette win and they have road wins at Providence and Butler. A loss for Marquette sets up an absolute must win home vs DePaul(followed by road games at Nova and Xavier).

Butler beat Villanova. They can play with anyone on a given night. Tomorrow should be a great game.

yeah but with how tough the league is, you don't want to go 2-4 and need to go 7-5 the rest of the way to finish at .500. This is one of those games where for Butler to get to 9-9, they almost have to have this game. Butler should be coming out this game as a desperate team.
