Delaware - Rd. 2 - Away - 82hawk - 01-07-2018 01:31 PM

Hawks' looking to not only win their first road game this season, but looking to not get crushed away from Trask.

The pattern has been similar all year. Good start and get a lead. Opponent comes back to get a lead or make it close at the half. UNCW allows a big run that puts the game out of reach early in the second half and we phone it in for the loss.

I watched the Towson game again and came away really disappointed we yanked our starters down 16 with about 7 minutes left. No, we weren't playing well, but how do your new starters this year learn how to work towards closing at the end of a game if they are on the bench? If we made three baskets or drew some fouls, and got stops, we could have gotten it to a 10 point game or less. It's entirely possible to go on an 8-0 run in just a few minutes. But who knows now?

We are 15 games into this season and are still trying to "figure it out". Here is what I hope to see today.

1. Play our starters for 30+ minutes. That would be Cacok, Talley, Taylor and Fornes. After watching a few games and looking at past success, there is no reason our best players aren't on the court 5-6 minutes more each game. Our Freshmen are still young and inexperienced. Fornes barely played last year and even Cacok didn't see the court much his first year. The size, strength and experience as you get older in college can't be underestimated.

2. Play more zone to stop the drive and keep your players out of foul trouble and on the court for 30+ minutes.

3. Play a 1-2-2 press on made baskets every once in awhile to shake things up. Make opponents uncomfortable in their offense by mixing it up.

I simply can't see this team changing our outcomes if we don't change something up more than we have. The introduction of the zone has helped, but it's not enough to turn this around.

I think we pull this one out

RE: Delaware - Rd. 2 - Away - 82hawk - 01-07-2018 02:20 PM

13:35 we sub in Estime and Gary for Bryan and Talley up 15-9. Let's see what happens.

RE: Delaware - Rd. 2 - Away - 82hawk - 01-07-2018 02:26 PM

Bryan comes back in at 11:00 and we are up 3.

RE: Delaware - Rd. 2 - Away - 82hawk - 01-07-2018 02:28 PM

Cacok sits after picking up his 2nd foul at 10:30 and Kalina comes in. Talley, Fornes and Cacok on the bench, Hawks up 21-19 at the 9:47 mark.

RE: Delaware - Rd. 2 - Away - 82hawk - 01-07-2018 02:30 PM

8:39. Game tied at 23-23.

RE: Delaware - Rd. 2 - Away - 82hawk - 01-07-2018 02:38 PM

Down 33-27 with 5:35 left. Taylor, Brown, Gary, Estime and Bryan on the floor.

Subbed too early. We get a flow going and then he subs. That has to stop if we are going to win any games.

RE: Delaware - Rd. 2 - Away - 82hawk - 01-07-2018 02:41 PM

4:00 left in the half and down 38-30. Talley finally back in. Hens immediately drain a 3 and go up by 11.

RE: Delaware - Rd. 2 - Away - 82hawk - 01-07-2018 02:44 PM

2:41 down 11. Talley, Bryan, Gary, Fornes and Brown.

RE: Delaware - Rd. 2 - Away - surfsalot - 01-07-2018 02:45 PM

Talley needs to keep driving and drawing fouls.

RE: Delaware - Rd. 2 - Away - 82hawk - 01-07-2018 02:49 PM

Talley drains a three before the half to cut the lead to 46-40. Need him on the floor as much as possible. Let's see if we can close this gap and win this.

This really stinks

Wow. Just wow. Wait until we play the top half of the CAA. William and Mary may beat us by 40.

Getting throttled by Ud has to be a low point no? Absolutely pathetic I’d be shocked if we don’t finish last in conference. I’ve been given very little reason to be remotely optimistic

Delaware loses by 25 to the Tribe at Delaware, and we lose by 20 to Delaware at Delaware, This may end up being the worst season in the history of men's basketball.

We've beaten Campbell(7-8), Drexel (7-9) as our only Div I wins. Add that to wins against DIII Greensboro College(4-6) and DIII NC Wesleyan(4-7) who lost to Greensboro by 34(we only beat them by 25), and you have the sum of our wins in 16 games.

Listening to McGrath, i'm even more worried. He said he tried every type of defense. Here's the problem. We suck at man and play it most of the time. We switch to a zone just a bit. He said we tried trapping and a triangle and 2. But, those switches only happen when the man to man starts to really go down hill so it's a prayer when things are falling apart. Not the best time to toss in defenses we never play and likely practice rarely.

Guess what we haven't done yet??? PRESS. Why the hell not? How much worse can it get? Play your precious man to man, but start forcing other teams to adapt by pressing off made baskets maybe 25% of the time. Force some turnovers, get some deflections, run some clock. Talley, Taylor, Fornes, Cacock and Bryan have all learned the press under Keatts. Heck, even Powell has practiced it for his whole college career. Let these players at least try something that allows them to be aggressive and gives them some confidence and adrenaline on defense.

The AP article called a player "Jordon Tall."

I guess you need to win more than 2 D1 games to get adequate coverage?

It's tough right now but they need to keep fighting and improving with what they have. Hope that they continue to get better on D and the new guys coming in next year bring D. Both reputably can do that. The PG does hawk the ball and REALLY passes the ball well and Sims is long/athletic. Taylor should be able to get there with his plus quickness. Estime looks to be able to do things defensively eventually, the guy sitting is a plus athlete and is long. Gary is pretty long and will improve. Fornes can do this and is athletic too-at least the team didn't commit TO's today. We've seen Talley and the walk on put pressure on the ball. They all need to come together and play hard and smart as a unit....it's the only way. They can score enough it seems. It's hard to take right now for all of us. It starts at Elon. Can the Hawks stop the 3 point barrage and get stops? That's the first step regardless of outcome.

It may not stay bad longer term, we will see. Coach needs a few rim protectors and possibly another athletic defender to close out the class. And, I'm going to hold out hope that they improve with this bunch.
