Kent State @ Northern Illinois - fallsdog - 01-02-2018 10:59 AM

The Flashes are in Dekalb tonight to open Mid American Conference play against the Huskies. Northern Illinois is 7-6 on the season and 5-1 at home. While they don't have any wins that jump off the page, they have defeated a handful of mid-majors and played decent games against Iowa, Iowa State and Marquette.

Leading the way for Northern Illinois is 6'0 guard Eugene German. The sophomore from 21st Century Charter School is averaging 19.4 points per night. Northern is also getting nice production from 6'4 junior Dante Thorpe who averages 12 points and is shooting just under 60% from the field.

The Huskies are guard oriented and although they have some big bodies on the roster, the scorers all seem to be 6'7 and under. Lets hope the Flashes are healthy and ready to play. Traditionally, this is the time of year when the lineup/rotation gets shaken up. Of course, if guys are not available who knows if thats even a possibility.

Its been said here before. Can't afford too many night where Jaylin Walker is 3-12 and De La Rosa picks up foul #3 before half. Looking forward to the conference season.

Go Flashes!

1-11 start from three... sad to say that's what we should've expected.

Can't be Rob can't control these chuckers better than this? Hitting the boards hard but absolute brick tossers almost to a man...

So frustrating that Duling & Peterson continue to be a liability. What will it take for them to brake though the funk they are in?

I thought Duling looked ok in the first half. Active on the boards on both ends. Wish he wouldn't have missed that pair of free throws and handled that fast break better. I also felt Walker shouldn't have given him the ball in the fast break as quickly as he did though.

RE: Kent State @ Northern Illinois - anti-zip - 01-02-2018 09:36 PM

I didn't think this was possible... but I think Walker's shot selection has gotten worse this year.

RE: Kent State @ Northern Illinois - Old School Flash - 01-02-2018 09:41 PM

Really hard to watch this. We just don't have a lot of talent. Allowing way too many offensive rebounds and Walker continuing to be "jack it up Jaylin"...

RE: Kent State @ Northern Illinois - axeme - 01-02-2018 09:53 PM

I really don’t think the problem is shot selection, it’s that we don’t have good shooters. What are we going to do, not shoot? Who is it that should be shooting ? We just have no one making open shots.

RE: Kent State @ Northern Illinois - anti-zip - 01-02-2018 09:55 PM

It's like the first time they got a two possession lead everyone started playing hero ball and suddenly we're getting blown out. It's the Albany game all over again only a worse opponent. An absurd amount of offensive rebounds given up too. Pretty much nothing good to say about anything we've done tonight.

RE: Kent State @ Northern Illinois - Old School Flash - 01-02-2018 10:02 PM

Absolute embarrassment! Can't shoot, can't rebound, can't win.

Started off rebounding well and going inside but then went soft on the glass and every shot came from the perimeter or on a difficult drive to the basket. Post players didn't work hard to get open thus we had no inside game.

My main complaint of this coaching staff has been that they don't seem to "control their players"...Teach them their roles coaches and demand they stay within that role!

Pitiful...

You don't think shot selection is the problem? Are we watching the same games? How many times does Walker get a three without a hand in his face? How many times does he hold the ball for a few seconds without moving then shoot it? When was the last time you saw what appeared to be a play run that got a shooter open? When was the last time you saw a Kent player make an escape dribble before shooting? We think we're a three point shooting team but we don't create good looks... but we shoot them anyways.

One other comment in regards to "What are we going to do, not shoot?" YES! Coming into tonight our three point percentage is the second worst we've had in the last 16 years. But we're still attempting a three on 25.9% of our possessions which is the 4th highest volume in the last 16 years. So yes, get better shots, or shoot less threes.

And for what it's worth, after tonight we now have the worst 3 point % we've had in the last 16 years.

RE: Kent State @ Northern Illinois - KSU Agee - 01-02-2018 10:11 PM

Woohoo! NIU MAC Champions baby!

You think the MACC isn't drawing enough people now, well I sure as hell am not going anymore. Not an hour and fifteen minute drive each way. Not to watch this. What a waste of $1060 for season seats this year. Well, maybe the Oregon State win was worth $1060?

I've got some chairbacks in section A if anybody is interested.

Thank God for ESPN 3.

Thanks for pointing out these stats. Startling, to say the least! 88.5% for NIU from the line tonight (23-26), and they're barely 70% for the season!

RE: Kent State @ Northern Illinois - GFlash68 - 01-02-2018 10:21 PM

After watching this debacle, I am reluctant to just lay out the criticism, but instead I would like to propose a question. Does anyone see anything that could give us a glimmer of hope for the season? Go a little deeper. Does anyone see something that can give us hope for the next year or two? Please lift me from my depression.

Some of the 3's taken were wide open ones but many were forced (particularly from Walker).

We have the biggest front line in the MAC (or darn near it) starting a 7' center and a 6'9" forward (6'9" and 6'7" reserves to follow too) but we don't get inside shots very often. Makes no sense. Gotta play to your strengths.

To me "shot selection" is not only taking an open jumper (vs. a forced one) but also having "balance" in shot selection...having both an inside and an outside game. Common sense says you'll make more 6 foot shots than 20 foot shots but this team (and coaching staff) don't seem to understand this.

Last point...Rob continually refers to Walker as a "volume shooter". Hell, anybody can do that. I want a "volume scorer!"

RE: Kent State @ Northern Illinois - Flashketball - 01-02-2018 10:34 PM

WHOA WHOA WHOA. Does Dannyb need to remind everyone AGAIN that this team and coach was only down 3 to UCLA halfway thru the 2nd half of the tourney last year before being blown out by 17!?!? I mean, all they did was lose to NIU by 14. But it was a one point game at the half!!! You guys should be ashamed for not settling for this!!!
