Pick the MAC (MBB) - emu steve - 12-30-2017 08:56 AM

MAC West, MAC East, POY, Coach of year:

My choices:

MAC East: Buffalo

MAC West: EMU

POY: JT4

Coach of Year: Murphy (runner up pick, UB coach).

Record: 12 - 6 in a very, very well balanced MAC. I don't see any team capable of going 14 - 4 in conference. Why 12 - 6? UNLIKE previous years, we did not suffer any blowout losses, like trailing by 10 or 15 at the half... One expects that a mid-major to suffer losses playing high majors on the road. They can be competitive or they can be blowouts. Our losses were 'good' losses.

What folks don't realize is how good of a job Murphy is doing with Minnie and Jackson. Check Jackson's scoring ave. at his previous school. Ditto Minnie.

Players make a good coach much better and Minnie and Jackson will make our team much, much better than what the so-called experts thought. Unlike Oakland (Nunn) our transfers are good people.

Sunshine is back lol

RE: Pick the MAC (MBB) - Luckeyone - 12-30-2017 02:18 PM

MAC East - Buffalo (Buffalo made a nice hire after Hurley left)

MAC West - BSU (how can anyone not pick the two time defending MAC West champions who have 8 Indiana all stars on their team, have a great man to man defense, players who can shoot the 3 Ball, and a very good offensive rebounding team).

POY - Wilder from WMU

Coach - Whitford

If we were selecting the teams based on starting lineups, I would choose EMU; however, factoring coaching strategy and the bench it adds up to BSU. I think BSU finishes 14-4 in the conference.

RE: BSU. BSU is hardly a dominant team. They TIED for the MAC West the last two years with 11 - 7 and 10 - 8 records.

So to go from that (those) to 14 - 4 seems like a leap of faith.

I'll still say it is either EMU or BSU in the MAC West. And I don't see WMU at all.

...

I can.... 02-13-banana And apparently 22 MAC voters did also.

I do NOT agree with the WMU votes, though.

That said, I wish the BSU game Tuesday was in Ypsilanti. I want to start the season 1 - 0.

Dear steve,
Just because Eastern is playing at Ball State, doesn't mean we can't win. I think we have a good chance at winning on the road.

BSU knows how to beat the EMU zone. Hopefully Murphy can adjust. We'll find out soon.

Agree.

CMU's women beat the best MAC WBB's team, BSU, in Muncie today.

BSU's MBB team is hardly a juggernaut. As I indicated earlier, they were not even the pre-season pick.

I hope you're right, Steve and EMU challenges BSU in the West. We can not discount WMU because their starting center has been sidelined with a stress fracture (Dugan). He's no JT4, but he is a pretty big presence in the paint at 7 ft.

OT I believe Bailey Steele (sp?)was better than Dugan as well. If we had Steele and just one more shooting guard I'd pick EMU.

RE: Pick the MAC (MBB) - emu steve - 12-30-2017 06:00 PM

One of the reason I picked Murphy as coach of the year was to make the point about his player development abilities.

Murphy is a lot better at developing players than folks here give him credit. Case in point is PG Jackson. His stats at E. Ky, a lesser conference, were nothing to write home about. He comes to EMU, sits out a year, and is one of the best PG in this conference. Minnie showed potential at a lesser conference but comes to EMU and is one of the best, if the best, PF in this conference.

What I like about transfers is that it is possible to follow the player 'longitudinally' they have stats from their former teams. One can see how these players have progressed (or regressed) once they come to EMU.

Lost ALL credibility with your coach of the year pick.

Maybe, Bob, but Chad said this is Murphy's best team.

Be prepared to eat crow if this team win big this year.

Bob, I'm not sure you thought your response out carefully.

In probability theory (part of statistics) there is what is called conditional probabilities, i.e., probability of something occurring GiVEN that something else has occurred.

So what is the probability that Murphy is COY IF EMU goes 12 - 6 or better?

One might say the probability of Murphy being COY given (if) EMU goes 13 - 5 is >85%.

If EMU goes 12 - 6 I'd say he is at least 50 - 50 to be COY.

I'm basically predicting EMU's record and events associated with it.

IF EMU goes 13 - 5 or better, JT4 is probably POY. And say 50 - 50 if we go 12 - 6.

Nothing crazy or being a homer for Murphy but understanding that awards follow records...

The question becomes: Who believes EMU will go 12 - 6 or better this year?
