AState/UCA to renew football series in 2021 - chiefsfan - 12-22-2017 05:16 PM

Mohajir had promised series would be renewed as soon as both teams could work out an opening. We're going to continue to play them despite what happened last year.

As we should. Hopefully the lesson was learned though. They should be taken seriously every time we play them.

Might I ask why? Good lookin' wemmins? Or do they travel in mass? Other than that, I see no upside for the hog nation to having UCA play in Jonesboro.

The Idea that two instate schools can play each other is still new to people in this state. Attendance will maintain a bump until the piglets start playing instate schools regularly.

Ignoring the obvious troll job in the question.

I get it. You try and keep the payday amounts instate and help the FCS team instate. It is, from a sportsmanship perspective, a pretty classy move.

Does UCA return the favor in helping stAte out when they need UCA's help? Do the non-Razorback schools cooperate? I don't know.

Would scheduling UCA drive more gate than say a game against, UAPB or Grambling?

I think this flies against conventional thinking. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I'd be surprised if USA scheduled a game with Jax State. My thought process...if you're scheduling a "win" against a FCS and paying for it....Schedule a team you can guarantee a win against. And a game where you are pretty much sure that you're going to be able to rest your first team in the second half. Remember, especially in the early season, good FCS teams usually can keep up with FBS teams in the first half (they almost always lose in the second half, due to depth concerns). So you end up with a tougher game. And many fans don't understand that and get p*ssed when they don't see you guys beating the FCS team 100-0 in the first half.

Playing UCA is like playing russian roulette just to show Fayetteville how it's done. A couple of years ago you got your brains splattered on the wall. I don't get it. Your AD is smarter than that.

You're probably correct that if the state AD is doing this to try to tweak the Hogs for not playing state, that he's delusional. He's usually not delusional, so there's probably something else going on.

RE: AState/UCA to renew football series in 2021 - sdcritter - 12-22-2017 08:00 PM

We gain so much more, even with a loss, by playing this game. There's a slow shift in perceptions happening in this state. Them playing so badly has helped fuel it. More and more folks are looking around and not buying into the "we all have to support them because they're in the SEC" BS. Especially younger folks who have grown up with the mediocrity and downright atrocious play during their lifetime. Us saying, "hey, we lost a game but we're not a bunch of entitled losers who want you to support us based on our athletic program's success in the 1960s," goes a long way toward leveling the playing field. Not to mention it's just the right thing to do.

I personally am ambivalent towards their athletic programs. I don't want them to do better or worse because of the team I support. But since I do support stAte I do want us to have an equal shake in the grand scheme of things.

I think the next 3 years are critical for them. If the new coach can't return them to middle of the pack in the SEC west the faithful are going to really go sour on that program. They've already alienated about half the state by not wanting to play significant games in Little Rock and turning their back on most everyone not in northwest Arkansas. Their elitist attitude is not playing well with the Walmart T-shirt fans.

Why not schedule a home game for stAte in Little Rock? Certainly not vs UCA, but perhaps against a team where you might not have a huge home draw/historical tie, such as versus Coastal or Georgia Southern?

I think that would make a much bigger and much more obvious shot at the Hogs, than playing UCA. And one much more easily visible to the casual fan in Arkansas.

So, lemme get this straight. Telling the younger crowd, "hey, we stink too but we're not snobs like they are", is going to level the playing field? Okay, I guess that works in a state like Arkansas.

I'm no AD, but I'd think getting to a New Year's Day Bowl game while the other guys were struggling to hit .500 would do a lot more for the program than playing, and winning or losing, a game against UCA. But that's just me. I don't get it.

Bingo. Or sell the idea to Memphis that they'll be playing on a neutral field. They're Memphis, they'll believe anything.

I think it's a good move. If you truly are "building a monster", you can't be afraid of anyone, and kicking their ass in a revenge game would help that cause.

Because it has nothing to do with where we play. It has everything to do with WHO we play.

You necksters stand to benefit from this as well. South Arkansas is one of the first places you should see an impact in recruiting.

Why move a home game to LR? They charge rent to play there. We're spending millions and millions to improve our stadium/fan experience and you want to move home games and screw over suite buyers? Why?

We've played in LR. Media doesn't care. Fans don't care.

I wish App would skip scheduling FCS schools, SSU drew the worst home crowd at the Rock in years. But scheduling FCS shools can be a positive. One, it possibly adds a notch to your win record. Two, scheduling an instate (or geographically close) team can draw a lot of fans, if it's seen as a one-off or at least a once/twice a decade game. An App vs. WCU/ETSU/Furman/Elon game would bring 30k in to the KBS if it were marketed as a special one-time event.

I think that's the thing that some of you guys are missing about this. In 2018 we play Southeast Missouri, in 2019 we play Southern Illinois. In 2020, the story is that we may not play an FCS at all (Trying to make up the Miami game that season). We played UAPB this season.

It's not as if we're playing UCA an absolute ton. This will be our 3rd game against them in a 25 year span. They are one of a group of FCS school that we rotate through when looking for opponents. They bring a lot of fans, and guarantee a large crowd. The last thing we need to do as a program is play scared, because an AState team in total rebuild mode with new players all over the field lost a game to an upper tier FCS school.

Keep in mind that we also host Memphis in 2021, providing two OOC games that will bring guaranteed crowds of 30K plus. Something we don't get in SBC play.

This isn't about Russian Roulette with Fayetteville. Before UCA, we hadn't lost to an FCS school since Thanksgiving Day 2001, when we were so bad people honestly thought we should just drop football.

This was our first loss to an FCS since we started winning, and we had to react somehow. The Decision was made to get right back on the horse and play again.

I don't care if the FCS opponent was a JMU or NDSU. The fact of the matter is, all Sun Belt School should be good enough that we can throttle the best of FCS. At least we're going to take the opportunity to prove it.

RE: AState/UCA to renew football series in 2021 - The Howling - 12-22-2017 10:38 PM

UCA has a pretty good following in Central Arkansas. They usually bring quite a few fans, and their pep band is very good. This game is usually quite a big deal in Arkansas, two instate schools playing each other.....sounds weird I know. There's a lot of local interest. One year the local ABC affiliate and the Little Rock stations broadcast the game statewide. It was good exposure for both teams. Lots of Hog fans were interested and tuned in or attended. Any butts in seats we can get is a good thing. Sure, we lost one against them, but it turned our season around for some reason. I always kinda pull for UCA, they understand a lot of the things stAte fans go through in this state.
