JMU to get indoor practice facility - monarx - 12-21-2017 11:33 AM

Sounds like it's small, but will definitely keep them competitive with G5 schools. Seems like their facilities will equal or better many FBS teams for the near future. Guess the extra student fee money from FCS is paying off.

RE: JMU to get indoor practice facility - JMUDukeDawg - 12-21-2017 11:43 AM

It's actually a condition of Mike Houston's new contract that an indoor facility be ready by August practice, so they are turning one of our athletic fields into a temporary indoor facility. I suppose some kind of bubble will get erected with some other temporary facilities.

The plan has always been that when the new basketball arena is built the old convo center is getting turned into a permanent indoor facility.

RE: JMU to get indoor practice facility - Mr.BigBlue - 12-21-2017 11:55 AM

So they found a way to used student auxiliary $ to pay for this. ODU could do the same thing ! Like I said ODU can find away if it wants to do the same thing. Auxiliary services are separate from student fees !

Maryland turned Cole Field House into an IPF and it is gorgeous. So they’ve proven that approach can be done and done well. Seems like crazy extravagance for FCS, but my guess is JMU will be moving up soon. Liberty is also building a new IPF and stadium expansion. ODU is going to have to step up our game to compete in the facilities arms race. What they are calling Phase one of our new stadium is not going to be enough.

The local article made it sound like JMU football practices were disrupted numerous times in the spring by rain and/or lightning.

I don't know but I expect JMU gained approval via being creative and describing the building as multi-use i.e. it's not a football facility even though it is a football facility. Charlie King is a master at getting buildings built.

If we aren't doing this for our new stadium plans, we need to start.

When I was an undergrad at Tennessee, we had a bubble facility for a student gym. Perhaps, that's what the long-term use of JMUs bubble will be for and that's how they justified using the student fee auxiliary funds.

RE: JMU to get indoor practice facility - Duke Dawg - 12-21-2017 02:26 PM

it's never been proposed as a football facility. but of course football will get the most benefit of it and is certainly the driver for it

but all sports will use it, and i can see baseball and softball getting a huge benefit from it as well. being able to go indoors in the winter and do more than just hit in a cage is a massive benefit.

RE: JMU to get indoor practice facility - jmu-fan-1981 - 12-21-2017 02:37 PM

It is only a 50 yard indoor facility for the next 4 years until our full scale beaut of an indoor facility is completed by 2022. So until then we're going to be slummin it a bit. https://pilotonline.com/sports/columnist/harry-minium/jmu-s-mike-houston-got-a-big-raise-and-will/article_7b376f04-8a1a-50f0-955c-15faa2845b0a.html

The biggest cost factor is building 18 wheeler-proof bumpers on all outer walls.

Construction can only begin after design complies with all official Virginia State rest stop facade requirements.

the way things are going for you, that rest stop will have more seats in it than your "upgraded" stadium.

Funny but it could be worse. Our best home games could be Elon and Stony Brook.

How many people attend JMU games? Nice to waste a large stadium

Lol do you really wanna go there? I'll just say more than 20K or whatever the "sell out" number is at foreman field - regular season alone it was 24K and then add an additional 3 home playoff games and we did well in concessions - donor $ goes up when we win games

Don't think you want to bring that up either. ODAF already surpassed $10 mil for the year.

We were over 24k in the regular season.

Playoffs are a different animal, for a couple reasons.

Nice try. Regular season attendance at JMU has been higher than ODU for years, and this season exceeded 23k. Only when you add in the post-season games does JMU attendance drop into the 19k range.

Say, when is ODU going to have ESPN Game Day on your campus? 07-coffee3

JMU fans are like 90s Yankee fans. Pounding their chest over beating teams they outspend 3 to 1. It's not impressive. You're supposed to win. Not winning at that level, after all the teams with actual resources left, would be embarrassing.
