USM adds womens beach volleyball - Reggie Favre - 12-18-2017 07:21 PM

ok, that's great. really hot to imagine and think about.

but once i get the visual out of my head, is that really a good idea? does anyone know if USM HAD to add a female sport? USM now has 10 female sports and 7 male sports. Everyone talks about how poor USM is and every AD talks about how we need more revenue. Why would we add an expense that wil generate virtually no revenue? The money used to fund womens beach volleyball would be better served going to improve a revenue generating sport (mens football, baseball, basketball) it seems to me. im sure there's a catch and a good reason we are adding this sport. someone in the know, please feel free to explain.

We were required by Title IX to add another women's sport. The administration decided to add the one women's sport that is the cheapest to have. This is best-case.

which is why titty 9 is an expense siphon for schools like ours....

nothing better than government mandates that don't accomplish a damn thing.....

Correct. It’s not about the number of sports, it’s about the number of scholarship dollars. While many sports simply have a men’s team and a women’s team to keep things even, football tips the scholarship numbers well into the men’s favor. It takes more women’s sports to even things out.

The choice between buying a bag of volleyballs and outfitting the Payne Center or Coliseum for gymnastics is a pretty easy one. I’d imagine beach volleyball coaches are cheaper to come by than gymnastics coaches, too.

the real question that should be asked is how much longer can we afford to support D1 football.....

eliminate that, and it opens up improving basketball/baseball facilities with the potential to further develop those as the money maker moving forward by eliminating many of the 'who gives a shite' programs.....title ix simply becomes a non-issue at that point

I don't give two shites if one likes it or not.........simply watch how this plays out in the next decade if we don't latch onto the next version of realignment.....

there's more ways than one to skin this furry kitten.....right now, we're stuck in a quagmire inhaling USD yeast fumes.....

9 women's sports to 7 men's sports still isn't an equal enough ratio?

Yay, another women's program that loses the university money every year.

Gotta have those equal rights! Apparently women succeed in life unless they are given the same amount of athletic scholarships as men.

I think the amount should be equal for each race too then. Chinese are being discriminated against in college athletics. Its sad, they dont stand a chance to be successful in life bc of this.

Just get half the players on the football team to Identify as women then problem solved. USM immediately would have extra male scholarships.

Tread carefully opening up that can o’ worms. Title XLIII just might mandate equal scholarship numbers for transgenders & every other subgroup a potential athlete could claim.

It's all about scholarship compliance.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, it isn't about the number of sports but the number of total scholarships. Football has 85 scholarships. It takes multiple women's sports to reach that number. Thus, the reason for there being more women's sports than men's.

As mentioned earlier also, I can't imagine Beach Volleyball being too financially draining of a sport when compared to the other options.

w/o looking at actual numbers, a conservative estimate would assume two additional salaries, travel costs, and support will be >300k ....and that doesn't count the pay for subsidy that is now in effect.....

if we have a D1 football program in 10 yrs, I'll be shocked....we're getting squeezed out like mayonnaise w/o inseminating.....

the writing is on the wall......

You don't think Gobbler and Flamingo are actively pursuing diversified Chinese beach volleyball talents?

You know that's probably exactly what would happen.

Start a lingerie football team. 50 scholarships up for grabs.

Will draw better than basketball and there's a better local talent pool. And we could eliminate at least 2 other women's programs that lose money every year.
