Kent State @ Wright State - fallsdog - 12-09-2017 08:04 AM

The Flashes travel to the Nutter Center in Dayton to take on the Wright State Raiders for the first time ever. Can you believe that? Kent State and Wright State have never played. Nebraska is in the Big Ten, Texas A&M is in the SEC and Kent State and Wright State have never played. There are some things I will never understand.

The teams have identical 5-4 records. Like the Flashes, the Raiders do not have a particularly impressive victory on their early season resume. Wright State has beaten Wayne State, Fairfield, Tiffin, Jacksonville, Gardner Webb and Ohio Valley.

Head Coach Scott Nagy has an 8 man rotation fueled by the offense of 6'3 senior Grant Benziger. The Cincinnati product is averaging just over 14 points per game. Benziger is joined in the backcourt by a pair of double digit scorers in 6'4 senior Justin Mitchell and 6'4 junior Marcus Hughes. Hughes played his high school ball at Youngstown Ursuline.

Protecting the paint are a pair of big boys in 6'9 275 pound freshman Loudon Love and 6'11 235 pound junior Paker Ernsthausen. Imagine Loudon Love playing for your local high school football team's offensive line. mmm, mmm, mmm.

Anyway, this looks like a good test for the Flashes. Wright State hung tough with Miami and they were neck and neck with big, bad Loyola on the road.

Two questions surround this game in my humble opinion. First, is Walker playing? Second, is Kent State mature enough to bounce back from Wednesday's shellacking and play a full 40 on the road at the long time home of the OHSAA Wrestling Championships?

GO FLASHES!

Call me crazy or maybe I'm missing sarcasm somewhwere but I know for a fact we played Wright State last year. I seem to also remember going to a game before the MAC Center renovations where we played them. We've definitely played before.

RE: Kent State @ Wright State - fallsdog - 12-09-2017 11:07 AM

I may have misread the game notes but it says first meeting. That does seem odd.

Oh yea. Wright State was decent last year and beat Kent by five at the macc

RE: Kent State @ Wright State - anti-zip - 12-09-2017 02:43 PM

Jim Christian's BC team beat Duke today.

RE: Kent State @ Wright State - anti-zip - 12-09-2017 03:20 PM

Avery needs to challenge Wright States bigs when they hedge. They're hedging aggressively and he's letting them stop him. Just run into them they call fouls on aggressive hedges nearly every time.

What an ugly first half. Between our horribly inefficient offense and listening to the Wright State announcer that sounds exactly like Dale Baskets this has been most unpleasant.

It’s been a while since there has been nobody to throw it to in the post.

This team's committing too many fouls - ouch - and Ball St took out Valpo today

RE: Kent State @ Wright State - anti-zip - 12-09-2017 05:13 PM

Looking like another year where we'll be a frustrating sporadic team that has the potential to go on a run if they get it together. A lot of bad today. I'll try to give Walker the benefit of the doubt that he was rusty but he was back to forcing ill-advised threes today (1-7). Several off iso-dribble situations. Another game where De La Rosa is a non factor and fouls out quickly. Not going to beat anyone when your top two scorers are playing like that.

It seems like we're still trying to find our identity and it's taking painfully long to do so. When De La Rosa is in there we don't seem to work to get it into him in good spots but rather we just lob it in or settle for outside shots. Then when he's out we don't use the post at all. I don't get to see practice so I could be way off when I say this, but it seems like we should've been trying to play Nwankwo throughout the non conference schedule to see if he could shape up into a rotation player. He's the only other guy that has the size and muscle to play like De La Rosa and since he's not getting into the game we can't play the same style when De La Rosa is out.

Our perimeter defense is very concerning. From what I've seen Bernstein may actually be one of our better perimeter defenders which I think is the only reason he's in the rotation. His 4 steals were nice today but we should absolutely be worried that we have 2 Sr guards and 3 Jr guards but we're needing to play a 6'0" walk-on.

Ty Linder mentioned that KSU & Wright State were 2-2 headed into today, and now Wright State is now 3-2.

RE: Kent State @ Wright State - GoFlashes7 - 12-10-2017 12:33 AM

Another 2 items I heard Ty Linder mention on the broadcast today, De La Rosa is shooting 87% from the FT Line, can they feed the ball to him and let him work to score and/or draw fouls?........KSU is last in the MAC in offensive FG %.

Add those 2 together and it doesn't matter much about anything else. If you can't shoot it from the floor or the line, you can't win consistently. A 3rd topic that Linder/Pavlik discussed was how concerned Senderoff is with the lack of rebounding.

Today's team stats through today's loss @ Wright State:
FG% = 42.3%
FT% = 73.1%
3PT FG% = 31.7%
Assists per game = 13.1
Turnovers per game = 13.1

Zabo is shooting 35.1 from the field and 27% from 3pt.

Here is the link to the statistics through today's game: http://www.kentstatesports.com/cumestats.aspx?path=mbball&year=2017

3 games left in the non-conference, Dec 18th vs Northeastern (how much improvement can they make in 9 days off?), Dec 21st vs Oregon State, & Dec 28th @ University of Albany. Then they open up MAC play @ NIU on January 2nd.

Northeastern is currently 6-4, here is a link to their schedule: http://www.gonu.com/schedule.aspx?path=mbball

Oregon State is currently 6-3, here is a link to their schedule: http://www.osubeavers.com/schedule.aspx?schedule=316

University of Albany is currently 10-1, here is a link to their schedule: http://www.ualbanysports.com/SportSelect.dbml?SPSID=84569&SPID=7999

What is everyone's prediction for what KSU's record at the end of non-conference schedule?

RE: Kent State @ Wright State - Muskrat - 12-10-2017 08:06 AM

Several things about the game disturbed me. I thought they'd be much further along by now. Sure, last year Hall was the player that everything revolved around and Edwin was a nice player, too. But they were the only players that mattered that are gone and wasn't Duling supposed to step right in and be a big factor, and Johnson, too? And, why is De la Rosa fouling so much? Surely the coaches can see what he is doing wrong and he is smart enough to correct that. And how can a team of D I players not shoot even a modest 45%???? I live in Harrison County and it is a heck of a drive to go to a game, so I'm not sure they have given me a reason yet to even think about it. As I commented a few days ago, Senderoff got things rolling last year after a so-so start, so I'm assuming this team will get it together, too. But they had better start within a couple or few weeks!!

be worried that we have 2 Sr guards and 3 Jr guards but we're needing to play a 6'0" walk-on.

also the amount of TO's considering the above, but the bigs seem to be the problem. Hopefully this gets corrected.

We have yet to beat a good team.

Both Sr. Guards are backups ... and would be backups on any team in the MAC, and likely not play much if at all for a couple of them.

The 6-0 walkon ... while still a walk-on ... does still have a lot of starting experience, albeit fpr a very bad team in Maine.

Jr. guards have big issues in that Avery lacks athleticism ... Johnson only an average player previously on a bad team ... and then Walker ... who would start on a few teams (the way he has played to start the season ... and most of his career... minus last to 2016-2017 games) ...

This team has pieces ... but can't shoot consistently on the perimeter and has yet to solidify its post rotation beside ADR. Duling has started, Pippen has started and Frederick (one game) has started ...

Back to the seniors ... they are really 'Sophomores' when it comes to playing for Kent ... not really seniors in terms of the program.

Combine all of the above and you have a .500 team. If they figure it out still might not win more than 18 ... if they don't figure it out team could struggle even worse.

But here is the scary part ... if they don't figure it out, 2018 could be a struggle as well, considering much of the MAC East is sophomore-junior dominant like Kent and most (Buffalo, Toledo, Miami, OU Akron) of the division teams are already ahead of KSU as it is.

In short, unless ADR can play his 20-22 minute and deliver 13/8 ... Kent becomes very easy to beat, even with the good 10-game Walker. At least, that's the way it looks right now.

RE: Kent State @ Wright State - burden - 12-11-2017 08:22 AM

I’m not as optimistic as I was after the first few games. While we have 4 bigs in the rotation the best one might be mediocre. I look at Akron with 6 freshman and they seem to be ahead of us already. After last year I suppose we need to be patient but it would be nice to get off to a quick start once in awhile.

RE: Kent State @ Wright State - Muskrat - 12-11-2017 09:47 AM

Agree with you 100%, Burden.

RE: Kent State @ Wright State - fallsdog - 12-11-2017 12:56 PM

In my lifetime, I have never been able to make chicken salad without chicken. I don't think there is enough chicken this season. At this point, the realistic best case scenario for a successful 2017-2018 season would be:

Jaylin Walker to get healthy and stay healthy and have those nights where he just isn't going to let the team lose.

Jalen Avery takes care of the basketball and shows signs that he is on the verge of breaking out as a point guard in this league. I don't know that he will ever take games over, but I do think he still has potential left to tap. Could be a difference maker, especially on the nights when Walker is hot.

Pippen & Peterson make big time progress. Easy to forget that they are just sophomores but I think both can have their nights.

Otherwise, with the exception of BJ Dulling, I think you have a roster full of guys who have either reached their potential or just don't quite have it.

RE: Kent State @ Wright State - Muskrat - 12-11-2017 01:46 PM

fallsdog, if what you say is true, and it may well be, what does that say about the recruiting the last few years?

RE: Kent State @ Wright State - cleveland - 12-11-2017 08:04 PM

(12-11-2017 01:46 PM)Muskrat Wrote:  fallsdog, if what you say is true, and it may well be, what does that say about the recruiting the last few years?

Actually Freshman recruiting I would give a solid 'B'

Jrs. Avery and Walker
Sophs. Pippen and Peterson
Fresh. Duling

Avery is solid ... Walker CAN BE All-MAC caliber but is not there yet ... Pippen starting to show as a rebounder and potential double-figure scorer ... Duling shows promise. ... Peterson, still waiting, but still time.

It's the transfers and JCs that have come up short. ... ADR has has issues ... but true 6-11 MAC post players are rare, and even 20 minutes from him is an impact ... After that, Zabo, Ridenour, Frederick, Nwankwo, Johnson are the ???? marks.

Two other transfers sitting out, I belive, that could make a difference later, but not this season.
