Ugly Bowl Season Ahead for Big 12 - micahandme - 12-07-2017 09:32 AM

Regarding recruiting talent and the CFP, someone brought up how OU is somewhat of an anomaly this season. They cited this article. https://www.sbnation.com/a/cfb-preview-2017/blue-chip-ratio

Clemson, UGA, and Alabama have recruited at a higher level than OU...but OU has supposedly "overcome" that to make the playoff. So it got me thinking...

The Big 12 has had a well-documented talent gap. https://www.si.com/college-football/2017/08/22/big-12-recruiting-oklahoma-texas-bob-bowlsby And they came into this season rather disparaged overall...but then...OU beat Ohio State and everything changed. Iowa State's loss to Iowa? Forgotten. WVU's loss to VaTech? History. Texas's losing to lowly Maryland? Ignored (but their close-loss to USC was praised.) Vandy's win over Kansas State? Forgotten.

The Big 12's other "big" non-conference wins besides OU over OSU? TCU over Arkansas (the 4-8 SEC power) and OkSt's road domination of 5-7 Pitt.

Did OU look impressive in beating the Big 12? Sure...but when you talk about talent gap, it absolutely exists for them because of how lousy the Big 12 is. Using Phil Steele's composite recruiting ranking, he has OU as 11th, 20th, 17th, 13th, and 17th nationally the past five year. That's not "elite" level, but it's a VERY high level. What makes their "talent" so impressive though is that the next Big 12 team is Texas, who not only has dealt with two coaching changes in the past five years but has seen a ton of attrition. Their classes ranked 22nd, 13th, 12th, 15th, and 15th. On paper, they should match up with OU, but only a fraction of that "elite" talent is even in Austin still. Baylor, OkSt, and TCU have notched one top 25 class in the past five years. Two teams regularly have top 20 talent...and everyone else--the other 8!!!--doesn't sniff the top 25.

How did OU look so dominant? How did Mayfield carve up the country? He and the Sooners beat a shaky Ohio State team (remember the first three quarters against PSU? remember the Iowa game?) and then crushed inferior Big 12 opponents.

Expect Georgia to roll over the Sooners in the Rose Bowl.

What’s BXII’s Sagarin ranking?

Georgia wins because they have a defense.

I presume you are asking since you already know the answer. The Big 12 is 2nd behind the ACC. The SEC East is the lowest rated division among the 9 in P5 and the SEC is 5th of 5 when combined, although the gap from 1 to 5 is pretty small, 78.52 to 76.96.

Give me Sagarin over recruiting rankings.

RE: Why Georgia will kill OU in the Rose - kurtrundell - 12-07-2017 06:43 PM

OU is going to roll thh Dawgs by 17+ points. UGA's D has feasted on lousy offensive teams in the SEC East, plus App State and Sanford. OU is going to run up and down the field on them. Plus UGA doesn't run a no-huddle spread like the entire Big XII. Perfect opponent for OU.

RE: Why Georgia will kill OU in the Rose - bullet - 12-07-2017 07:31 PM

I think it will be a good game. UGA hasn't faced a QB or passing game anything in OU's league. OU hasn't faced a running attack like Georgia's. UGA's QB hasn't faced many good secondaries. OU doesn't have a "great" secondary, but they are used to passing attacks and UGA's QB likes to throw things up for grabs, hoping his receiver wins the battle. OU's offense will face a very strong D line. UGA is 4th in total defense and 6th in yards per play.

I think it's going to be a great game. Georgia hasn't faced offensive talent like Oklahoma, Oklahoma hasn't faced a defense like Georgia's.

If you put a gun to my head, I'd probably pick OU just because offense, not defense, seems to win titles these days. But then again, I think Georgia's offense is better than OU's defense.

Its already a great bowl season for the B-12 with Oklahoma making the final 4 in the playoff. What's the payout for that semi - final for the Rose Bowl? 04-jawdrop 04-jawdrop 04-jawdrop 05-stirthepot 05-stirthepot 05-stirthepot 03-shhhh 04-cheers
