Sun Belt Bowls a celebration of realignment - arkstfan - 12-04-2017 11:02 AM

Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl
NMSU vs USU. They've been conference mates in the Big West, Sun Belt and WAC

AutoNation Cure Bowl
Georgia State and WKU. Spent one year together in the Sun Belt.

R+L Carriers NOLA
UNT won the Sun Belt alone or shared 2001-2004 Troy won or shared 2006-2010 while each were in the league.

Raycom Camellia Bowl
MTSU shared two titles while in the Sun Belt, A-State won or shared three while MTSU was a member and their final meeting in 2012 was a winner take all 45-0 win by AState.

Only Appalachian State vs Toledo in Mobile is not a realignment special.

At least we've got history from last year. Plus the coaches know each other really well.

Five bowl games no one will watch. 04-cheers to those who do. Some of those games are going to be bad, real bad.

Or a celebration of the failings of realignment? Same teams keep playing each other? Schools leave and bring up new competitors, increasing the gap between the G5 and P5 as the remaining talent is spread thinner?

Massey ratings say all but the Arizona Bowl should be competitive. No one is a pretty subjective term.

Generally bowl teams draw their largest TV audience of the year for their bowl appearance and when they don't it tends to be either a P5 playing in a weird slot or a G5 that played a highly watched game vs a P5 in regular season (for example Rice's game against TAMU that was Manziel's return from suspension out-drew their bowl and Colorado State had a slightly larger audience for their game with Bama than their bowl that year).

One thing I've observed with realignment is the same groups of schools tend to keep ending up with each other. For example Memphis and Cincinnati have been Missouri Valley, CUSA, and AAC in football. Colorado ditched the Mountain States and eventually ended up with Utah in the Pac-12

Wyoming ditched the league to join the WAC and ended back up with Utah State in MWC.

You end up with a few lower rung schools giving up and dropping out and few others rising up but over time the same basic groups keep ending up together.
