UAB Signee injured - WesternBlazer - 12-02-2017 06:51 PM

Joe Henricksen‏ @joehoopsreport

Big blow for Morgan Park with loss of senior big man Tamell Pearson. The #UAB recruit underwent an emergency surgery on his eye and will be out until January.

RE: UAB Signee injured - BlazerPhil - 12-02-2017 09:14 PM

Oh no. I hope he recovers and gets back to normal for the rest of his year.

RE: UAB Signee injured - Big Dee - 12-02-2017 10:01 PM

Still need another big, get well soon Tamell.

Are we still recruiting? Thought we filled all our open slots already?

We have 13 players with 2 walk ons=11 scholarship players. (McCoy was almost certainly not awarded a 2 year free ride)
We lose 2 seniors. We signed 3. That leaves 1 slot open even assuming that Smallwood, Lavender, Norton & Sullivan return even though they will likely all graduate and be free to transfer without sitting out. (The limit is 13)
I would hope we sign 2 more in the late period. Because I would wager 1-2 of the above 4 will not return.

One guy we are interested in, along with MTSU, Buffalo & others is this guy 6-8, 220 juco averaging 12.3ppg and 7.6 rebounds which is a little low versus most juco bigs we have signed historically. (Not named ASW or Beas)

Depends on how you look at it. If we take McCoy's scholarship since we will have about 5 guys who can run point (which is a good thing) we could open up one. But not too long ago we enquired about a guy name Yarden Willis haven't seen much about it lately but he's the last 2018 recruit ive seen linked to UAB.

Most likely one spot, Anderson McCoy spot.

Unless we unload Thomas,Deion,or Luis.

Is Smallwood a graduate player this year? I thought he graduated last year.

I think he did graduate, but had two years left of eligibility.

I find it had to believe Hurtado isn't going to be a part of our future. He should fit in nicely. I am guessing(pure speculation) that him and Ehsan sat down and had a conversation about the current situation. If he was told he was behind Bryant, Norton, Lavender, Darling, and Perry but PT would be there later on in his career, he may have agreed that taking a redshirt year was best for him.

Just going off minutes and lack there of. I hope nobody transfers personally. But we need a true big body, bigger than Butler and the other juco guy I've heard about ( both 6'8 guys). We gave Yarden Willis a look but nothing came out it, and Penn St and Bucknell are the latest schools to visit him.

RE: UAB Signee injured - Big Dee - 12-06-2017 11:36 PM

Casper college has two unique ones.

Willis sounds like a 7 foot stiff. We have one of those.

Id rather have a 6-6 guy that can play than a 7 footer who can't.

Like Frederick's. 18 ppg, 10 rpg and 42% from 3. Even though its a crappy juco conference.
--------

Rashawn Fredericks of Motlow State recently reopened his commitment. The 6'6 wing immediately becomes of one of the best available wings in the country. In 2016-2017 season, Fredericks averaged 13.1 points per game and 10 rebounds per game while shooting 41.1% from 3. He was Freshman of the Year in Region 7 and First Team All Region. Last season, Motlow finished with a record of 30-6 and went to the National Tournament.

He is athletic wing that can really shoot the ball from 3. He has a great motor and quick off the floor. He is a versatile defender and competes for rebounds on both ends of the floor. He is very good in transition getting to the basket and can finish thru contact at the rim. He has a good first step in the half court and can blow by defender.

JucoRecruiting.com talked with Fredericks recently. Here are the highlights of the interview:

JucoRecruiting.com: What made you reopen your commitment?

Fredericks: I committed this past summer before I had a chance to really weigh my options. After thinking about it for a long time and talking to my family, I felt like it was a good time to decommit and explore any new opportunities that may come.

JucoRecruiting.com: What are you looking for in a school?

Fredericks: I want to go to a great program with a coaching staff that I really connect with.

JucoRecruiting.com: Who all has contacted you since announcing you are back open?

Fredericks: MTSU, Missouri State, SEMO, South Florida and about 20 other schools.

RE: UAB Signee injured - UABfan1 - 12-07-2017 08:28 AM

As far as how many we will sign. I think we will attempt to sign two. A big and a wing.
But, last year, our intention was not to leave 2 scholarships unfilled.
Sometimes, its better not to sign anyone than sign a guy who clearly is not good enough.
UAB has signed plenty of guys that were not good enough over the years.
You don't always know for sure.

As far as who might not return, the obvious possible guys are Lavender & Smallwood.
I hope Nick & Lew stick around for their 5th years.

And, a number of bigger schools will probably attempt to poach Scootie. I don't necessarily mean blatant illegal tampering.
More like contact his family or high school or aau coach and that kind of thing.

Seems to fit MTSU's "small ball power forward" philosophy...

If we have a spot to use, I'd get another big. If we have two spots, I'd go with a big and wing player.

Did anyone else watch Loyola- Chicago beat UF last night ? 3* Freshman Center Cameron Krutwig was instrumental in keeping UF honest in the post. Verbal Commits show that we offered him first in April of 2015. 03-banghead
