Cleveland State @ Kent State - fallsdog - 12-01-2017 07:52 AM

The Flashes and Vikings square off on Saturday at the MAC Center. Tip time is set for 7:00PM. Cleveland State enters with a 2-4 record and is coming off a three point win over Arkansas State. The Vikings also defeated Coppin State earlier this season. The losses include Akron, Rutgers (70-38), East Carolina and Central Connecticut State.

CSU is paced by four double digit scorers including Kenny Carpenter (14.2ppg), Dontel Highsmith (12.8), Stefan Kenic (10.3ppg) and Bobby Word (10ppg).

Carpenter, a 6'5 senior from Detroit is also averaging 7.8 rebounds per game. Kenic is an interesting player. The 6'9 freshman from Belgrade, Serbia has completed at the national level in his home country. He appears to be a stretch four, who could create a match up problem for KSU.

Not sure this will be as heavily attended as Kent/Cleveland State matchups of the past considering that Wisconsin plays in the Big Ten Championship game at 8:00PM. But regardless of the crowd, it is always nice to get these bragging rights for the year.

Not only is this an opportunity for a home victory, but this is a Cleveland State team that Kent should beat. Akron, who I thought was in rebuilding mode, beat them by 10 at the JAR earlier this year. And while I know nothing about Central Connecticut State, I know that CSU lost to Central Connecticut State.
No matter where the current KSU squad is in their development, I have to think the Flashes have more talent on the floor than the Vikes.

A couple of things to watch. Will Walker play tomorrow? If not, that could change things for Kent State. It would be nice to see Mitch Peterson find his offensive form and for the Flashes to take advantage of CSU lack of depth in the post. Also would be nice to see De La Rosa stay out of foul trouble and clean up the glass for 27+ solid minutes.

Kent State 77
Cleveland State 63
the game will played in front of 2,784 fans at the MAC Center.

I will be the first to ask the obvious, does anyone know Walker's status?

Great games at Tom Benson. And the flashes won too

The analysis on this basketball game is overwhelming. By the way the Buckeyes are leading at the half 21-10.

Just wondering. When was our fourth best big as good as Frederick. I’m not sure we have had that much depth at the 4 and 5 in a long time.

And none of them are seniors with Whittington waiting in the wings.

This teams far from a finished product but during the good stretches you can see a lot of potential with this group. This is one of the more complete rosters I can remember Kent having. As burden mentioned the post depth is impressive. The post players we have compliment each other well too. A true 7-footer in AD that can score with his back to the basket, rebound well, and passes well out of the double team. Two athletic shot blockers in Pippen and Duling that can stretch the floor to give AD room and are quick enough to flash open when he gets doubled. Defensively their games mesh well too. AD takes up a lot of room in the lane and on the glass which enables Duling or Pippen to sell out for more blocks.

Guard play you've got one of the better floor generals we've had in a while in Avery, a very solid back-up/co-starting PG in Zabo, and the big scorer/shooter in Walker.

Really the only thing we're missing is another big wing. Other than Peterson every perimeter player is 6'3" or shorter. We could really use another big wing defender. Ridenour is a very good defender but he'll give up a decent amount of size to teams with bigger wings. It seems like our perimeter defense has been exposed at times this year. Tonight during CSU's big run in the second half it felt like they were getting in the lane at will and getting too many open 3's. Trying Duling at the 3 some could be the answer but I'm not sure if he's ready for that. The good news is most MAC teams are missing more than one thing and this one roster flaw should only be a one year thing with Harris at 6'4" and Gholston at 6'5" on their way. I really like the way the coaches have put this team together.

I agree. barring major injuries or any other "issues", this group should end up being a pretty good squad. Senderoff proved last year that he can get a team to really gel. I had soured on him, but I admit he has proved me wrong.

The Spicer/Ortiz/Hall front court was solid, but not 4-deep

Now we got 5 tough games - Xavier, Wright State, Northeastern, Oregon State, and Albany. They're all ranked higher than us in the Sagarin ratings. I'd be happy if we win 3 of these.

Any word of how long Walker will be out?

He looked to be walking around fine last night and wasn't wearing a boot. So my guess is he'll be back sooner rather than later.

Senderoff was quoted in today's ABJ as saying Walker will be returning to practice Tuesday and that he was about 70% Saturday. My question is, what's the story on Johnson, that Bernstein is playing ahead of him. I was lead to believe he was really good.
