Memphis paper: Tigers rooting hard (secretly) for USF to beat UCF - TripleA - 11-22-2017 06:01 PM

And NOT for the reason all you UCF fans are thinking. Nope.

Because we prefer to have the home field.

http://www.commercialappeal.com/story/sports/columnists/geoff-calkins/2017/11/22/memphis-tigers-rooting-hard-secretly-south-florida-beat-central-florida/888052001/

EXCERPTS:

"Friday, Memphians are all Golden Brahmans.

Or Bulls, if you want to use the more recent University of South Florida nickname. But it was the Golden Brahmans before that.

Indeed, the fight song is still the Golden Brahman March.

Sing along, if you’re in the mood.

For USF, we’ll always be

with all our might

we fight the battle here and now

and we will win the victory.

Let us hope they’ll win the victory."

*****

"...if Central Florida wins, Memphis will have a rematch with Central Florida in Orlando. But if South Florida wins, Memphis will host South Florida in the Liberty Bowl.

This explains why Memphis coach Mike Norvell has been humming the Golden Brahman March all week.

Nah, I’m making that up."

Every school not named Memphis or USF should be rooting for UCF. A UCF vs Memphis championship game guarantees the American gets the access spot.

Looking past East Carolina? Probably doesn't matter but still --

Because Geoff Calkins wrote an article on it?

Doesn't matter much. We're still playing the CCG, win or lose to ECU.

But you really think that is a big issue with the Memphis team? We need to beat ECU to ensure we get the Peach Bowl if we win the CCG. ECU would be a bad loss we don't need. They're not looking past anybody.

But it's fine for sportswriters and fans to look ahead. What do you think USF and UCF fans have been doing for 2 weeks now? 03-lmfao

Real men should never shy away from competition. They should always be wanting to play the best. After all, to be the best, you have to beat the best.

Wanting to back into any sort of scenario is cowardly.

I don't blame Memphis fans rooting for us on any basis - HFA, or they just think we would be an easier opponent - if they think it will help them reach their goal of winning the AAC title. That's just the smart/obvious thing to hope for.

Facts are, UCF cleaned Memphis's clock in Orlando once before, and USF would be a home game, so both point toward rooting for USF.

So no controversy on this end. 07-coffee3

You suck at trolling. Nowhere in there did it say Memphis wanted to duck UCF. It said we wanted home field advantage.

I suppose if the roles were reversed, you would prefer to play on the road? Yeah, right. 01-wingedeagle

Well, if the Bulls beat UCF, they will be the best.

If that happens you guys might want to book your hotels in Atlanta right after the game.

What's ironic here is how this meshes with all the talk of "unfairness" about the CFP.

Is it really fair that Memphis is already in the AAC title game while UCF, who beat them like a drum H2H and also has a better conference record, still needs to beat a 9-1 USF team just to get where Memphis is?

Heck, if Memphis and UCF both lose this weekend, Memphis will be in the AAC title game not UCF, even though UCF beat them like George Foreman pounding a punching bag AND having a better conference record!

Something seriously wacked about that, but nobody is complaining?

Maybe next time don’t have an fcs type schedule

The Difference is that Memphis, UCF, and USF all have access to the championship game. If they win, they’re in.

well Memphis is in the west division and UCF and usf are in the east...

So what? That's an arbitrary distinction. UCF has a better record in the conference and H2H and yet they aren't assured of the title game and Memphis is? That truly makes no sense.

Should be USF is not complaining. Did not have to play Memphis, Navy, and SMU this year. Not their fault, but still should not complain especially losing to UH at home.

When a conference splits into 2 divisions, that’s the way it works. Some years, the East will have better teams. Other years, the West will have better teams. What is there to complain about?

Complaining? The past few years Memphis has been in that exact spot because the AAC West was murderers row with 3 ranked teams. The east gets one year where more than one team is decent, and you start whining.
