I wonder if what took so long was they didn't want to give Brady Hoke(the interim coach) enough time to make a fools gold case for having the permanent job and so that's why they waited so long.

well he really lost control of this, but IMO it really shows an issue with Tennessee (and a number of other schools now as well) the guy has 11 seasons coaching at 3 different places and only 2 losing seasons in that time and only one other season with less than 8 wins (7 wins one season)
so he can coach, but when your fans have quit on you 3 or 4 games into the season and with today's soft athlete students well once things turn sour you can bet that many of those athlete students will stop trying as hard because it simply matters less to them when big change starts happening
the SEC SEC SEC is easily the worst conference in the country for this they churn through coaches so fast it is hard to keep up and the way their fans and even worse administrations handle things is pathetic
look at Tuberville and Auburn back with airport gate, Les and LSU two years ago, Chizik wins a MNC and a year later they have already turned on him and going into his 4th year it was clear it was over, Malzan has been handled the same way as well......Arkansas and Nutt got all screwed up then Ole' Miss loved him until they hated him......Gumbo at LSU will probably be gone by the middle of next year if not early 2019
at some point the coaching churn just kills you and it gets harder and harder to recover and lately fewer coaches are willing to wade into those messes

At Tennessee he went 14-24 in conference play.
This years team never recovered from the Hail Mary vs Florida. Following week barely beat UMass and then they got crushed by Georgia.

I think a lot of programs are going to look at Strong and USF (he should have been fired from Texas they were going the wrong direction) and hire some of these retreads

Jones hauled-in good recruits. He was aggressive in tactics. Perhaps the big problems were team preparation and game day coaching. A place such as UT delivers pressure from many angles, and there are a limited number of coaches that are aces in handling it.
He may do very well going back to a G-5/mid-major coaching assignment, or even a few of the lower-profile P5 schools could consider him.
Will Muschamp improved his profile/resume with added experience and campus changes.
Former Nebraska Coach, Frank Solich, has had a long tenure at Ohio.
Same may happen with Jones.

yeah not only that- but look at what Kiffin has done at FAU as another prime example.
Heck look at the FCS ranks. Mike London from Howard. 8-26 last 3 years Howard was. 7-3 this year.

They problem with Butch is that while his shtick works with 16-17 year olds, it's painfully annoying to fans, boosters, and university officials. Muschamp is at least very likable and are straight shooters with the media, that's why Florida tried very hard to give him every opportunity to win.
Butch is not a bad coach but he doesn't belong at a school with a large fanbase.
