ESPN: Don’t mess with Texas, in hoops - Moody Magic - 11-08-2017 10:33 AM

7. Don't mess with Texas! Every Power 5 program from the Lone Star State (and SMU) will make the NCAA tournament
That's right. You get a bid, Mohamed Bamba and Texas. And you get one too, Texas A&M, Baylor and Texas Tech. We didn't forget you, Shake Milton and SMU. And we see you, NIT champ TCU, home of Slovakian superstar Vladimir Brodziansky (14.1 PPG, 2.1 BPG). You're going, too! Should be a fun year for the whole state. In college basketball, at least.

9. Might interest some people on here, too.

#9 has been predicted every year since 2013 ... pretty standard at this point.

RE: ESPN: Don’t mess with Texas, in hoops - C0|db|00ded - 11-08-2017 11:43 AM

What a weird-ass prediction. Almost sounds spiteful. It certainly isn't logical. If the rest of his "prediction" is true and the Shockers accomplish all the items listed, Gregg Marshall will be anointed Christ the King of Wichita and be well on his way to $4M a year. Where on earth is he going to go where he can maintain the momentum of competing for a national championship like he certainly could be in 2018-19 with McDuffie and Shamet? The school would have to offer $5M+ and not be a rebuilder. UNC-Cheat? Duke? Kentucky? K|Uck-City? Not one of those programs (or blue chip recruits) are going to endorse/allow Marshall's floor-burn-defense-first philosophy. There's zero chance he will go to a middling BCS, and if the interim coach fails at Louisville, it will be a full-on rebuilding situation.

Arizona? Replace Sean Miller?

I just don't see the job opening other than University-6, which if they were going to get Marshall, I'd think it would have had to have been immediately. Maybe they could get him with a $5-6M dollar offer if the Shox flub up early in the tournament - that's a BIG if.

Given their recent/all-time NCAA Tourney records, I'd love to "mess" with any of those Texas schools in the Big Dance.

Given he is already in the top 10 it certainly wouldn't be about the money. So I agree to some extent. I think if he is snubbed again by the committee as a result of the league though it may cause some disdain. That could result in him looking for a higher profile conference so he isn't disrespected come selection time. I do think this seems to be shaping up as the best all around year for the league so we shall see.

RE: ESPN: Don’t mess with Texas, in hoops - Wudizzle - 11-08-2017 12:18 PM

Marshall just got a new job. I don't see him taking 2 new jobs in 2 years.

RE: ESPN: Don’t mess with Texas, in hoops - C0|db|00ded - 11-08-2017 12:53 PM

People need to remember that when the Shox went to the Final Four it was on the backs of a 1st year Juco-transfer (Early), a 5th year PG transfer from Oregon (Armstead), two freshmen (Baker, VanVleet), a couple dependable sophomores (Cotton, Wessel), a solid Juco-transfer senior (Hall), and the rest role players. There were no players on the team with any notable recruiting rankings out of high school (Fred was barely top 100).

We absolutely had the national championship within our grasp when we had 07-coffee3 down by 12 with only half of the 2nd remaining. It had been the largest deficit the 07-coffee3 had experienced in the tournament. Gregg Marshall should have won national COY in 2013, it was an amazing feat. Instead they gave him COY in 2014. He should have won both years considering the recruiting/coaching job he did with mostly unheralded players. If everybody returns after this year we are just as deadly as in 2013, maybe more even.

Marshall has a program filled with his type of kids. Any program he inherits at his pay grade will be filled with exactly the opposite of what he would call "his type of kids". If he listens to his ego he will leave attempting to fulfill the prophetic message of the Peter Principle. I believe that Marshall and Burger Boys would get along like water and oil. Reportedly, he's rejected 5-star recruits telling them they don't have the attitude to play for him. Do you think that would be allowed at 07-coffee3? I believe that Marshall is exactly where he belongs and we are very lucky to be able to say that.

Jeff Goodman is an unapologetic Texas homer. His views are pretty slanted. It’s hard to take anything he writes seriously.

He assured everyone that when the Texas job opened up, Marshall was as good as gone.

I believe it is Myron Medcalf who wrote this story. It's surprising out of him. It really sounds hopeful/bitter/elitest. I thought the Shockers were beyond this type of noise.

Quote:And then, Marshall will finally receive an offer too good to reject and make a move to a Power 5 school after leading Wichita State to prominence few could have imagined prior to his arrival.

Lots of backhanded compliments and subtle jabs at Wichita State AND the AAC.

If he's feeling so confident in his prognostication abilities, perhaps he could have said where Marshall is going. Just a "Power 5" school huh? Penn St.? Nebraska? Boston College? Clemson? Georgia? ...dumba$$.

Scroll down to the second article from the same link written a couple hours later by Paul Sabin, my new best friend.

Quote:Wichita State will reach the national championship game ... where North Carolina could await

Last season, Gonzaga made its transition from the darling Cinderella of yesteryear to an NCAA runner-up. Though Wichita State has a Final Four on its résumé (losing to eventual champion Louisville in the 2013 semifinals), look for the Shockers to follow a similar script to the Zags. BPI gives the Shockers a 17 percent chance to get to the title game, the highest of any team.

Who might the Shockers face in the national championship?

BPI's projections give the best chances to Villanova (15.3 percent), Kansas (15.1 percent), Purdue (8.7 percent), Cincinnati (8 percent) and North Carolina (7.8 percent), and there's plenty of reason to fear the Tar Heels on that list.

UNC showed last season that elite shooting isn't required to win it all when you can attack the offensive glass. If Roy Williams can get this team to dominate in that area the way the last one did, we could see the first repeat champion since Billy Donovan's Florida Gators in 2007.

It's perfectly understandable that some media types are getting tired of Wichita State being the media darling each and every year. It's normal that some will be looking to throw us under the bus at some point and replace us with the next big thing. Myron is the first this year to float the trial balloon.

If he gets a good seed in the American and goes far in the tournament, and his money stays good at WSU, is he going to leave in order to get a good seed and go far in the tourney?

If he didn't leave after being in the MVC, then I doubt he'll leave now. He has a P7 job.
