Game-day atmosphere and complaining “fans”.... - jmutoml757 - 10-30-2017 07:58 AM

If you want a good laugh or a smh moment go over to the JMU Nation Facebook page and read the post about game-day atmosphere, then sit back and enjoy the 90 or so responses. wow. Some don’t think we’re die hard enough, while others want to sit on their hands like fans at the RU bread box. The one “get off my lawn” guy is so ridiculous he’s funny. That said, there are a lot of spoiled, “sit down or I’m calling the usher” types at BFS, which is annoying. Sadly, the students cleared out early in a tightly contested game. But, our game day atmosphere is developing; it’s an adolescent now. IMO the one complaint I have is the band fails to engage the crowd like it used to...I remember songs that got the crowd singing along... “I want to know if you’ll be my girl”....stuff like that. I don’t know much, but I know this....I have a good time at every game.

i haven't been on there, and probably best that I don't go on there, but I bet I know the get off my lawn guy you're talking about without even looking.

That FB group is really whiny. Shame because it was put together for a good reason.

There was another post of someone complaining (maybe the same one but I don't think there were as many replies) that started with how the woman was at her first game in Harrisonburg in TWENTY-FIVE YEARS. How are you going to complain based on one game. If there wasn't so much good info that gets passed through there (the reason it was created to begin with) I'd consider leaving...

^ in her defense... I think she was complaining that she had been asked to pipe down / sit down .. .she's ROOTIN

RE: Game-day atmosphere and complaining “fans”.... - Potomac - 10-30-2017 09:26 AM

I don't believe in criticizing other fans, unless they're just being hostile or something severe. I prefer you root and act like you care, but a butt in a seat is a butt in a seat. Everyone supports in their own way. Everyone around me sits on their hands all game, but I also realize they're elderly.

It could be worse. The seats could be empty.

You may be right, I saw the number of years and other complaining "fans" and stopped reading. If she was complaining about not being able to root then her point is well taken and no one should be chastised for rootin'!

RE: Game-day atmosphere and complaining “fans”.... - NovaDukes - 10-30-2017 10:31 AM

I think some of the frustration is coming from fans who have been yelled at and reported to ushers/Duke Club/Ticket Office for standing and cheering for the team. I try to stand only on defensive third downs and briefly after good plays. That type of behavior is entirely unacceptable to some and they criticize and make calls to the University after every home game about me.

I've had a couple of "down in fronts" thrown my way this year, but I get a pass because my 70 year old mother-in-law roots harder than anyone and she's standing up directly in front of me. I simply point at her, shrug my shoulders, and keep standing. Can't complain too much if my mother-in-law is showing you up.

That's awesome!!! Love it.

If you want to sit on your hands and do nothing then go home and stream the damn game... those tickets could be used by those who truly root.

RE: Game-day atmosphere and complaining “fans”.... - DoubleDogDare - 10-30-2017 11:03 AM

That facebook page is a train wreck. At least when people complain on here, they generally have the background/knowledge, just have different opinions on the decision/step/opponent/team/etc. On facebook, the uninformed are complaining about things they have no idea about.

FWIW, I'm in the club that I only stand if the row in front of me is standing. I won't ask them to sit or anything, I'll just stand up. I can make just as much noise seated and not block someone's view. Our D is legit but I don't think they can tell if I'm standing or sitting out there on the field mid play. With that said, I will totally stand up mid play in excitement out of reflex.

You root as loud and proud as you want. First time you tell me to stand you can find your ticket 04-cheers

I’ll never understand the connection people seem to think there is between standing and being loud but whatever floats your boat. I bought seats on row 1 so you stand all you want behind me haha.

I am able to make more noise on third down on my feet than I can if I stay seated. Root hard sitting or standing.

Geez. Not another, "you aren't a fan if you don't stand" thread! I buy front row seats in the collar so I don't have to worry about dipsticks planting their ass in front of my face. I wish I knew how to put a video on here. I would put that one of the ass wipe sucker punching the older gentleman who asked him to please sit down. It was at a Carolina Panthers game a couple of weeks ago. He was arrested and I hope he spends plenty of time in jail to deal with his anger issues. Maybe even gets the pee pee knocked out of him while he is in there.

You obviously need to work on your stomping technique. While sitting, both legs can be in motion at a higher rate of speed as the level of effort to lift the foot is lower due to lack of upper body weight and the impact of gravity. The increase in speed causes an increase in the number of stomps while the lower effort in lifting ensures a higher level of downward force positively affecting the volume. Additionally, the lower level of effort limits the oxygen requirements of the lower body which enables you to scream louder. It's science bruh. (heavy sarcasm) 04-cheers

This will happen some day at a JMU game. Standing in a section where everyone stands is one thing, but when you are the only one standing in an area where no one else stands you are simply an arrogant person. You think you are better than everyone else. Same personality as the person who passes 100 cars in a right turn lane and cuts in front of everyone at the last second.

RE: Game-day atmosphere and complaining “fans”.... - JMad03 - 10-30-2017 01:14 PM

I don't think sitting or standing is a sign of a good or bad fan, although I do think you better make a LOT of noise. Our home field advantage isn't determined by how many people sit or stand up, but how loud we are. So if there's a key third down and you aren't doing a damn thing... I am not happy with you. Will I come over and punch you.... hell no. But I do think you better be loud. Stomp your feet, clap, whistle, bang your plastic cup against the seat.. I don't care. Just make NOISE!!!!!!

I'm more in line with NovaDukes, meaningful third downs or fourth downs attempts and briefly during exciting plays. If someone in front is standing, I'll usually just stand as well. However, that is one great thing about the 400's, it's steep enough up there that people can stand in front of you and you can pretty much see over them.
