Wasn't he one of the good ones that stayed behind to coach after Butch flew the coop?

He was a very good DL coach (turned Derek Wolfe, Walter Stewart, and Jordan Stepp into monsters, and also got Dan Giordano and John Hughes into the league), and will be a welcome add...he's also a pretty friggin good recruiter too, just look at his UT pulls over the last half decade.

This is awesome news 04-rock I was hoping he'd be available amid the Butch firing.

It’s a very good hire as long as thas rest of the staff recruits their butts off.

Better Xs and Os guy than Washington but not going to be nearly as universally liked. Recruiting is probably not his forte. Great coach though.

I think, given the haul we pulled in these last two years (Taylor, Tucky, and hopefullly/eventually Hutch in '17 and Martin, Vann, Becevich, and Metz in '18 along with the underclassmen we have on the line now) we can afford to trade DL recruitment for a guy who can develop premier talent...and Stripling showed that in his last tenure here. I'm a very big fan of this one.

Looking at the trade off:
Martinez leaves - can't recruit, shaky coach
Mickens enters - better coach, heard he was a good recruiter too

Washington leaves - phenomenal recruiter, good coach
Stripling enters - Really good coach, questions about recruiting

BTW, I love this hire too.

I agree...I would take that tradeoff. Two decent recruiters can make up for one who doesn't and one who pulls the weight for two, especially when you've already got good players in who need coaching.

I cannot wait to see what Stripling does with Metz after what he did with Walter Stewart. Speaking of Walter...that wouldn't be a bad guy to keep an eye on in the next few years for this staff if openings come up again. He has done quite well so far at EKU.

Stripling is a very good position coach. He's a solid recruiter when he put in the effort. The last few years at Tennessee though he was tired of recruiting and didn't want to do it anymore, thus the reason he moved into a quality control role last year.

Great thing about Mickens is he further builds the Cincy coaching pipeline into the program. We've now got two highly capable and sought-after assistants in Gino and Mike selling recruits on choosing Cincinnati (who chose Cincinnati themselves at one time). It's the best way for us to sustain success moving forward, including after Fick leaves.

OSU losing Kerry Combs to Vrabel and the Titans. Don't see his act playing well with professional athletes. Of course the Titans probably have a lower player budget than OSU

Mike Vrabel obviously disagrees.

Maybe he wasn't delivering Cincy as well as Urban had hoped?

My perception of Coombs is that he is, first and foremost, a recruiter, and screams to get players excited. I would never have imagined him coaching in the NFL. Never.

This could actually bode well for us, as OSU is losing their primary Cincinnati-area recruiter.

RE: Coaching Carousel 2018... - Cataclysmo - 01-24-2018 01:36 PM

Wasn't there some wishful thinking going on that Fickell was going to snag Mike Vrabel as his DC?

Yeah, that seems like a schtick that won't work with paid professionals. Is he going to coach positions or just be an advisor?

Anyone who’s ever worked with the guy swears by him.

Most folks who don’t are either UC fans or people who don’t like Colerain HS.

I’d take him on UC staff again in a second.

I would too, to be clear. The guy was awesome to work with, even as a walk-on squad kicker...I just don't know how his method of coaching would mesh with guys making $15m a year.

Coombs to TN Titans? BIZZARE!

His best skill was recruiting and screaming. Is the needed by a pro team?

RE: Coaching Carousel 2018... - JackieTreehorn - 01-24-2018 03:45 PM

Since he's moving up to the NFL, he will no longer be wearing a short sleeve shirt during frigid temperatures to prove his toughness but instead up his game by wearing only a loin cloth on the sidelines...
