Didn't we get the former Kent State HC to fill Martinez's spot?

That fell through.

Three? Apparently I haven't been tracking well. It's not just Washington and the new position?

CB coach Willie Martinez left a few weeks back.

OT: but did you guys see that SMU hired UConn's OC away from them?

I was including Rosfeld's position as well.

So is that four? Martinez, Washington, Rosfeld, and the new position?

Rosfield was not a full time assistant coach was he? I believe there are 3 full time spots available beginning next week. I'd personally like to see Fickell try and hire a local high school coach for one of those positions. Specht would be a great DB coach or maybe with the 10th position get someone who would really help with local recruiting, an Andre Parker or Doc Gamble (currently WR's coach at Kent State I believe).

Washington had his hand in so many of the signees' recruitment processes...he is a humongous loss, and hopefully that doesn't end up costing u with foundations laid for the '19 guys (and some of the '18 signees). The good thing is all those guys are locked in...the bad thing is that they're probably pretty damn unhappy right now.

Still think we should try to get Mickens for DBs. Dude has done more with less up in BGSU, and obviously has the playing experience to lean back on when it comes to coaching.

He just took the DB job at Kent State last week.

I guess he could always change his mind...

It's a shame Haynes didn't materialize. He would have been an absolute home run as DB's coach and from a recruiting standpoint.

Wouldn't be a college coach if he didn't...

To be honest, I was kind of disappointed with the overall performance of the DL given it seemed to clearly be the strongest unit on the team and the reports of how good BC's DL had been under Washington. But his recruiting more than lived up to his rep so I hate to lose him.

Reports are that Washington is also changing what position he's coaching at UM, possibly to RBs. So much for that whole trench mob thing on both counts I guess.

I don't recall a dline coach jumping to rb's. Odd move position wise, but i'm sure way more $.

I believe he was RB's coach at Boston College from 2013-2015. That may be his comfort zone more so than coaching DLine.

He actually coached RBs at three years at Boston College before switching to the DL. So not a position he is not unfamiliar with.

BTW: LSU just signed its DC to a deal for $2.5 million a year.

Don't forget that U of Arizona is now open, plus the NFL hasn't raided anyone from college yet either. There's an interesting piece on espn where 45 of their analysts ranked the coaches they'd hire for a hypothetical NFL HC job. 3 of the top 4 and 7 of the top 15 were current college HCs.

Plus there's some thought that it's not quite as labor intensive as some of the other assistant jobs, thus giving a good recruiter more time to recruit.

When pressed into it most of them have been around it enough they can coach about any position. Most of the position coaches are not reinventing the wheel.

Heck, our RB coach has his name on Shank Pavillion as a QB.

How do you recruit and how do you instill energy and work ethic in preparation and off the field. That’s how assistants separate themselves from the pack.

Note not a single one is a Bengals assistant.

That would make sense considering that only 6 head coaches got canned in the NFL when some people were predicting up to 14 firings. It seems that the pickings for a decent HC among the ranks already coaching in the NFL are seen as being pretty slim. Must be when you can go 1-32 over two seasons and get to keep your job.

I have no idea if it is true or not, but I have heard many people say that QB's don't always make good QB coached. That could be a reason Gino has been working with other offensive positions.

That ship sailed when Zimmer and Gruden left. Jackson, jury is out.

By the time Marvin's contract is up, he will be coaching the Bengals.
