New question for the idiot AD at Tennessee. If Mike Gundy is willing to consider your job why in the world would you give it to Schiano? What a moron.

UT won't be a turnoff to guys even in decent spots currently. Most of those guys have batsh!t crazy fanbases, too. Like the super hot girlfriend who is freaking nuts....eventually no matter how hot she is its time to look for another one.

Look, if a coach thinks there are good enough facilities and enough money there to win, that there is enough talent there now, that they can recruit to that school enough to win, and that the payday is going to be large enough over a long enough guaranteed period of time, they will see it as an attractive option regardless of what we think.

My biggest fear as a coach would be the crappy Chancellor they hired from UC. She is a mess.
Bev Davenport is horrible. When she was interim at UC she sent a BS piece that had "Diversity as a core essential". I challenged her. Diversity is great if it happens from getting the best students and profs. Diversity that is placed ahead of getting the best is stupid. Equal opportunity not equal results.

04-cheers. Never understood how diversity for the sake of diversity raises the bar. If you bring in the best of the best, it will naturally result in diversity of thought and creativity which results in better teaching, more competitive classroom environments and advancements in research.

I just want to be clear that I will NOT be available for the Tennessee head coaching position.

I'll do it for a week! If there are any Tennessee athletic directors reading this, send me a DM.

One week would probably pay more than I make in a year. 03-weeping

Well, I happen to have an unsigned MOU...

I am a capitalist thru and thru - and I like Gundy - but $7M/yr for a coach who has a single conference championship in 13 years is nuts. That's ~$1M less, on average, than Saban's new deal.

Herm Edwards (career 56-78) being a serious candidate for ASU job is double nuts.

I hope I live long enough to see a major university declare bankruptcy, because it's going to happen.

UT must not use the hostess program for recruiting anymore.

RE: Coaching Carousel 2018... - jarr - 11-29-2017 08:04 AM

All these schools feel pressure to get the big splashy name hire. If they did their home work and did a little more research there are probably tons of hires that would work l, but UT is focused on the Grudens of the world.

RE: Coaching Carousel 2018... - bearcatdp - 11-29-2017 08:22 AM

Maybe hey should think about hiring a search firm to tell them this.

There comes a tipping point when the offer is big enough, but I just feel a lot of these coaches like Matt Campbell feel their current position is better. Depending on where a young coach comes from they may not want to jump into another rebuild once they finally got things working in their current gig. On top of that Tenn has been through numerous Chancellors and AD's which is not as attractive as a stable university. Then you have to deal with a fan base that will turn on you quick, and I am sure the way the Schiano thing was handled will have coaches second guessing as well.

All that is moot if the university flashes 6 or 7 mill a year in front of your face, but when places like Iowa State can offer a great living without the circus of Tennesee, I think a lot of coaches may be a little slower to pull the trigger on some of these jobs.

It is also a lot easier to win in the Big 12, Big 10 or PAC then have to play the SEC West/Alabama in a title game.

As much as I hate to say it, Kiffin's move a few years back looks smarter by the day. Tennessee is where coaching careers go to die.

I had that argument recently with a buddy of mine. Why would any coach who is sitting there in a similar situation with the likelihood of continued raise increases leave? Why would any coach who has a fanbase in the palm of his hand after winning 7 games leave? Why would any coach who has a chance to win his conference leave for a situation where that's a near impossibility?

I mean, hell, with Georgia's resurgence, Tennessee is going to have even more issues trying to recruit the SE than they already were. Florida kids are staying further South, Georgia kids are now staying in Georgia, and there is next to no high end talent in Tennessee anymore. What Tennessee needs is a talent development type coach, but there is no way in hell that their fanbase would go for that.

The AD should just call an old friend up and offer it to him over the phone.

Up next for the Vols Nation spurn show: Chad Morris and Jeff Brohm.

Quote:Tennessee has interest in SMU coach Chad Morris and Purdue coach Jeff Brohm, according to a source with direct knowledge of the Vols’ coaching search.

The Vols didn’t plan to waste any time moving on from Mike Gundy after the Oklahoma State coach turned down what the source described as “an aggressive offer” on Tuesday night.

The source said Tennessee has not yet interviewed Morris, but Vols representatives placed calls to other prospective candidates to gauge interest even before Gundy informed Tennessee of his decision.

Morris, 48, makes $2.1 million in his third year leading the Mustangs’ program, according to the USA Today coaches salary database. Morris is a Texas native and Texas A&M graduate who spent 16 years coaching in the high school ranks. He has improved SMU’s record each season, from 2-10 in 2015, to 5-7 in 2016 and 7-5 this season.

Brohm makes $3.3 million and has a $15.8 million buyout after one season coaching at Purdue, also according to USA Today. The former Louisville quarterback and one-time Tennessee football recruit is 36-16 as a head coach, having led Western Kentucky to seasons of 8-5, 12-2 and 10-3. Brohm won Conference USA titles with the Hilltoppers in 2015 and 2016 before being hired away by Purdue, where he is 6-6 this season.

Vols athletic director John Currie is intent on getting the hire done soon. Indeed, Currie’s timetable is being pushed by the new early Signing Day that begins on Dec. 20.
