Those unsubstantiated death threats were the last straw. This is the first of many coaches that will be let go this year. No different than any other year. Tough business for millionaires to be in.

Hate to see all this talk derail UCF's season. Crazy how early it's starting. That was definitely the case with Houston last year and the Texas talk.

Not the first, but the first major...

Oregon State's Coach resigned several weeks back, leaving the buy-out on the table. I'm pretty sure that was the first of the season.

But Florida will start the carousel turning in over-drive as the schools that were certain to fire their HC's will do so to try and jump on the "hot commodity" names.

Butch has to be out after losing to a not so good UK team

i'm thinking about the hot list and besides Frost and Campbell, i don't know who else is on that list? i imagine it'll include a ton of coordinators. Frost and Campbell are going to make a ton of money this offseason.

Campbell is not going south. He is succeeding recruiting the same types of kids he recruited at Toledo. That won't fly in Gainesville.

Would it fly in Lincoln? i think Riley gets the axe.

I'm betting Frost heads home, and Nebraska backs up the Brink's truck to ensure it.

One thing appears certain: the AAC is the new cradle of coaches (sorry Miami-OH). Unless a competitive TV deal is created or "P6" becomes more than a marketing campaign, the best coaches from the American will be harvested annually.

There is opportunity in that for UC if Fickell is the coach we all hoped for. If he's truly committed to Cincinnati, he could create a program that is built to last while the revolving door continues at other AAC outposts.

Before there was a P5, or even a BCS6, coaches who were committed to their schools built excellent programs at places such as Virginia Tech and Kansas State. And they had to turn down elite offers regularly to stay and do so. Fickell starts with a much deeper talent pool for high school recruiting than either of those states. I believe it can be done here. And I'm more inclined to believe Fickell will stay because of his deep Ohio roots.

I have a neighbor whose son in law is Assoc. AD at OSU. He said LF has a 10 year plan and only 2 jobs would cut it short and those are OSU or ND.

We've got a long way to go before LF is considered an attractive coach to anyone outside of Cincinnati. I don't worry about that. In fact I'd welcome it if it meant we were relevant again in the world of CFB.

Right now Luke Fickell is closer to the hot seat than he his cashing in at major program.

I wouldn't go that far. Even if he doesn't win here, UC won't fire him for another 4 years at least due to the size of his buyout.

On the flip side, Scott Frost is one of the most sought after coaches in the country, and last year his team was 6-6. If Fickell turns things around here next year or the year after he will be on everyone's list for a power conference job.

Getting one of those jobs from here requires BK level success. If he got one of those jobs I'd be sad to see him go but it'd be completely worth it to experience that level of success.

I think that's right. Frankly, after season one with Butch's four wins if you had told me he'd be coaching at an SEC school steeped in tradition and national championships just two years later I wouldn't have believed it. And that's not to suggest Butch was as good a coach as Brian Kelly.
