Men's Basketball Recruiting 2017-2018 - Slinkin Street Flash - 10-09-2017 07:22 AM

Verbal Commits is reporting a commitment from 6'3" point guard Xavier Pinson. Buffalo and Toledo were also recruiting him. He will play at Simeon HS (or rather Neal F Simeon Career Academy) in Chicago this year. Last year he was at St Patrick's HS in Chicago.

We only have 2 seniors this year, so we don't have a lot of scholarships to offer. Since Zabo and Ridenour are graduating this year, and Avery and Taishaun Johnson are gone after next year, point guard is a need.

Not many verbals yet around the league. ... Is this one or two verbals for Kent State??? And does anybody know or heard of anything about the latest guy.

This is our 2nd verbal for next year. Deandre Gholston was the first. Pinson had a slew of low- and mid-major offers and was leaning toward Buffalo at onen point. One source had him as the 20th overall prospect in Illinois.

Record-Courier says 11th best in Illinois (4th rated point guard) and recruited by Iowa, DePaul, Georgetown, and Toledo. Looks like a good passer.

Well we can close the book on this kid as he has reopened his recruitment.

That's really weird. Anyone know the story behind that? A bigger school pushing him to decommit so they can keep him on the back burner as a back up plan maybe?

Agree , really weird ... these kids have been recruited for awhile, and often make three or more visits to schools.

They 'visit' expecting to be offered, and are usually given a week to make up their mind. ... Recruiting in a slimy business, so who knows what made the kid change his mind. But to say he made his mind up too quick is ????

For Kent's sake, hopefully this doesn't/hasn't cost them another player along the way. ...

It's situations like this that lead to JC/transfer recruiting in the spring. Most schools try to build with HS recruits, but this is what often happens, particularly with the potentially good ones. The big boys string them along.

For the kid, hopefully he knows what he's doing.

I note that LePear Toles, who supposedly was offered by Kent State and Akron and a few others years ago, will sign later with Akron for 2018-2019. I read that he turned down mid-majors after high school and went to some prep school in hopes of getting a Power 5 type offer. It never came so he is playing JUCO this year. So that is two years he could have been playing D I mid-major ball but decided against it, only to end up with a mid-major for only three years of eligibility. Strange journey to just end up where you could have been in the first place. A friend told me he was hoping for an Ohio State offer that never came. It sounds like the case of someone not being as good as he thinks he is. I bet that is common among today's kids.

Looking on the positive side, it appears Julian Sullinger will be an asset with recruiting as it was mentioned that Julian was involved with the recruiting process. Okay, so this one may have gotten away, but hopefully this is a sign of better things to come.

I'm more familiar w HS football, and can tell you it's common. Switching schools his senior year, committing them decommitting, those are all signs of a kid getting bad advice from a supposed "mentor". I wish the kid the best.

Article from Ohio.com with Coach Sendy giving an outlook for the upcoming season. The season cannot get here soon enough, considering the dismal football season the Flashes are having.

Seems like a pretty good get. Plays on a really good JUCO team and put up pretty solid numbers last year. Solid assist to turnover ratio. Offensively, looks like he's a shooter hitting 117-258 threes. 45% three point shooting is impressive but it's really impressive with that volume. Only made 48 shots inside the arc so the three is his game.

He's from Toronto. Seems like our coaches are starting to develop recruiting ties in Canada as this is the third Canadian player we've added in the last couple years.

Looks like Gholston and his team had a heck of a game in their sectional championship. I think the thing that excites me the most about his game is his rebounding. I love guards that rebound and if that translates he could really help us be able to play Pippen and Duling together. That lineup gives up a lot of offensive rebounds because they both go for blocks so playing guards that get on the boards is important.
