I think expanding the first division would effectively kill the lower Scottish divisions.

The SPL (Scottish Premier League) was founded in 1998 as a breakaway from the SFL (Scottish Football League) but as with the leagues in England there was still promotion and relegation between the two.

In 2013 the SPL and SFL were (re)merged into the SPFL (Scottish Professional Football League)

Scotland is building a Pyramid system that includes the Highland and Lowland leagues that in theory would allow a team to move from the bottom tier to the top.

The only real threat is Celtic and Rangers moving to The English league (unlikely) or a pan-European league (slightly more chance)

I was just suggesting that expanding would cause the 2nd division to have much less interest and be less profitable.

I see, yes that would be true, outside of the big two you only really have a big(ish) support in Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen. The larger the top tier the less likely you'll have any of these teams relegated.

With little TV money the smaller teams get a financial boost when a big boy drops down.

As an American of Scottish descent I'd like Scots to quit thinking small. The SPL will never amount to much. However there is no reason a deal could not be made with the BPL to expand that league to 22 teams, 2 being Scottish. Certainly Celtic, and whomever is top of the table. Beating English teams would be a huge source of pride and Scots would throw much into such an enterprise. There would be a true destination for the top teams.

Premier League will stay at 20 clubs; they won't add more. There are already too many fixtures for Premier League teams between 38 Prem matches, two domestic tournaments, and Champions League or Europa League.

Someone floated the idea awhile back of letting Celtic and Rangers enter at a lower level on the English ladder and try to work their way up to promotion into the Premier League. I suspect that would not be appealing to any of the Scottish clubs.

The only possible chance is if they create a premier league two which was talked about a few years ago and then raise the draw bridge.

So similar to the American model but with some promotion and relegation between the tiers.

You could then have two levels of either 16 or 18 teams

Celtic Rangers would be in

Maybe Hibs, Hearts and Aberdeen

Other than that there is no benefit for the English clubs to let the Scots in.
