Norfolk State is not good. They lost at home to D3 Lynchburg College 83-80 tonight. They also lost to Virginia State, but that was an exhibition and VSU is picked to win the CIAA this season.

RE: 2017 basketball - devyanks90 - 11-13-2017 10:01 PM

Middle beat Murray State 72-67.

This guy lost me here:
Quote:In two games the Hokies scored a combined 243 points. They played Detroit Mercy (who??) and The Citadel.

I mean, they aren't exactly a power and the thing they're probably most known for is having Dick Vitale as coach, but it's not like some random af D2 school either. He acts like they're a typical CUSA opening-day opponent.

Also, where does he come up with GW playing Florida State on the 11th in Hampton? If they're going to go back in time three days, why would they waste it on the Peninsula? It's at FSU and it's tonight. They host Hampton on Saturday, so maybe something got lost in translation?

And finally, why in God's green ass did he have ODU ranked behind Towson, NSU, Hampton, Morgan State and UMBC, among others, in the first place?

RE: 2017 basketball - ODUCoach - 11-14-2017 03:31 PM

It's dumb. Virginia Tech might be the best team in the DMV. At minimum, with what they've shown and what they've returned, Tech should be ranked ahead of VCU.

And, FWIW, I hate VPI.

RE: 2017 basketball - FearTheLion - 11-14-2017 04:43 PM

George Mason ahead of us?? Pfffftttt!!

NBC Washington really should get out more.

2017 basketball - Monarchblue - 11-14-2017 06:13 PM

It's not absurd to think Mason is better than us.

I'd agree as the key word is "think". But my opinion is our defense would lock them down and the result would play out similarly to last night.

But I guess we'll see as the season goes on.

RE: 2017 basketball - Gilesfan - 11-14-2017 07:00 PM

I guess its not insane, but tough to support. They were equal to lesser last year and lost Moore this year. It's early, but Ken Pom has them 175 and blue ribbon picked them 10th in A10. I think we have the better newcomers and better returning players.

I'm not sure people realize the improvements VT has made.

RE: 2017 basketball - Old Dominion - 11-14-2017 08:15 PM

I'm concerned about our inability to stop guards from penetrating and driving to the basket. Saw it again last night. This will keep Porter and Stith in foul trouble. Guess I'm not feeling quite as optimistic as most others. Last night was not a very pretty win. We can't really "wait for the team to jell". Most of our marque games come early. I say 1-2 this coming weekend.

I understand your concern. The question I have is should we open the game in a zone to protect our bigs a little? It sounds like we have been practicing it and didn't Jones go on record last season as saying he didn't feel comfortable with having Brandon and Porter on the floor in a man defense? I get that our calling card is man defense but it seems to me it might be wise to open in a zone and get through 3/4 minutes of play to get a feel for how the game is going to be called. So far the opening minutes have been tough starts for our bigs.

It's in Rhode Island.

Bryant is an upper half NEC team and probably better than most teams CUSA schools are hosting this week.

Pack rolled by 23. Liberty beat Wake tonight, the Flames have beaten a Big 12 football school (Baylor) and an ACC basketball school this fall, albeit both are at the bottom in their leagues.

They just took Louisville to the wire. We are in no position to look down at them.

Did you look down on us last year? We took a better Ville to Ot while Mason lost by 11 (if that is your readoning).

2017 basketball - Monarchblue - 11-14-2017 10:26 PM

What does that have to do with how we compare to George Mason? And why on God's green earth do you keep quoting Kenpom this early, when even he admits his rankings mean nothing this early in a season?

We had our chance with UNC at Foreman this year.

Drexel defeated Houston last night. Drexel is picked to finished 9th out of 10 in the CAA. Houston was picked to finish middle of AAC.

CAA > AAC?
