UMass game has been moved to 2022
Oct 14 is now UC at home
Oct 28 is now Houston at home
Nov 4 at UConn

Wisconsin moved the 2017 game so Umass was all we could fill it in with.

I believe that the Michigan State buybout let to UMass being added
And Wisconsin moving the return game led to San Jose State being added
Or the other way around SJSU was added for the last one to change the scheduled game
So we lost two home games vs Michigan State and Wisconsin and had to replace with UMass at home and SJSU on the road

FYI.. These are both correct.
The 2017 season had BOTH Wisconsin and Michigan State on the schedule as home games.
Both decided to change it (buy it out or move it.)

Tis has led our AD to require strong buyout clauses... Since it has bit the program in the ass other times as well.

Michigan State actually changed the 2017 game to 2018 game years ago and then over 3 1/2 years ago in Spring 2014, Michigan State bought out their return game to USF in 2018.

Michigan State actually changed the 2017 game to 2018 game years ago and then over 3 1/2 years ago in Spring 2014, Michigan State bought out their return game to USF in 2018.

"Last minute" is relative. CFB schedules for OOC are made several/many years in advance. A cancellation even a couple of years before can cause massive scheduling headaches

This is especially true being in a non "P5" conference trying to schedule teams in "P5"
Even if a game is cancelled 2 years before, it's pretty tough to get a similar matchup because other teams have already made their own schedule. USF already has most of the OOC schedule set until 2020, and several matchups for 2021-2024.
