2017/2018 Numbers - squeak - 09-13-2017 08:48 PM

Would anybody like to speculate on what type of individual production we might see from our players this year?

RE: 2017/2018 Numbers - squeak - 10-21-2017 07:11 AM

So, with the first open practice behind us, does anyone care to speculate on the different lineups we might see this year and projected numbers that come with those? What type of lineup might be the best option?

RE: 2017/2018 Numbers - GoBucsGo - 10-21-2017 08:54 PM

I think we'll go with:
Bradford
Payne
Burrell
Rodriguez
Jurkin

to start. Quick off the bench I would predict Armus & Harrison, and not far behind them would be Obi, Long, and McCloud. Edwards? Could fit in there somehwere. Yep - we could 5 in 5 out and maybe not step down in a huge way. It's ridiculous what combos the Bucs can run this year.

RE: 2017/2018 Numbers - GoBucsGo - 10-21-2017 08:55 PM

Also, I read the descriptions of the Thursday practice. If we're that strong defensively, we'll be just fine. Criticize the adage all you like, but defense wins championships.

Believe this breaks down more in groups than individuals. Perhaps like this:

1. As they go, the team goes....Bradford - Payne - Burrell - McCloud
Expect that these 4 will carry the load on both ends. If they don't combine for 50 per night, team is likely in trouble. A fair portion of this will need to come from their defense as I don't think Bucs have the firepower to win a lot of pure shootouts.

2. Fair share contributors...KO - Long - Romy - Harrison - Hodges
While large donations & even explosions are welcome from this group, $5 contributions are likely to be more of the norm. They just need to be solid defensively, rebound and send in their 4-6 pt pledges regularly.

3. Just don't bounce the checks...Jurkin - Armus
These two can help in small doses. They just can't hurt more than they help. Dont expect either to see more than 6-10 minutes and if they're solid it's a big bonus. PJ is what he is at this point and can be a factor blocking shots in short bursts if nothing else but not expecting any 6th year revelations. Armus is of course a freshman and will likely do what freshmen do. Just need solid relief minutes from him.

4. Scout teamers - Williams - Good - Overstreet - Reppart - Edwards
Everybody has a role & these guys need to do theirs well in preparation. Good (for sure) & Williams (likely) are redshirting and won't play. Overstreet & Reppart are walk-on's & will only see "game over" minutes. Edwards is just the odd man out in a rotation that will eventually reduce to 9 or 10.

Not going to get too excited about record in non-conf as I expect ALOT of experimentation & development will take place. With just a couple of exceptions there hasn't been much separation of players in practice yet but this should take care of itself when the lights go on. While we want to win em all, important for fans to remember it's about the SoCon & I suspect Bucs will be ready come January. See a lot of similarities to year 1 and suspect season will be much like that as well in terms of record - except they'll win in Asheville - again.

Haven't had time to get to this yet, and it seems as tho the Preacher has stolen some of my thunder, but that's fine. I'll quibble just a bit, tho....

First, I completely agree with his point 1. Unlike GoBucsGo, I see McCloud either starting, or playing 15-20 minutes.

I also pretty much agree with his point 2. And yes, large donations/explosions will occur. I can see Hodges having a 15-pt. game (or more) very easily. Much less easily for the others, but depending on matchups with each opponent, there's room there for a Harrison or Rodriguez to have games with 10 or more on occasion.

I agree with his point 3 in theory, but even tho Overstreet is a walk-on, I maintain he's well ahead of Mladden right now. But will Forbes be willing to play a walk-on ahead of him? Unknown. The bias would be against that, but we'll just have to see. Against some teams, I can see Overstreet getting 8-10, IF we can get him the ball enough in proper spacing and position. As I said in another thread, I expect to see Jurkin's minutes go up by 20-30+% this year. *IF* Forbes uses Overstreet like he should, and not 'shun' him as a walk-on, he will have more than mop-up minutes.

I would also have thought Edwards would have been "odd man out" until I saw those last few possessions of the live-game practice, and Forbes's enthusiasm for him in that stretch. I'll call him a 'sleeper' who wouldn't shock me if he's playing 10-12 minutes by sometime in mid-season. At whose expense I don't know; maybe Obi or Long? You have to divvy up PT amongst those three.

Also completely agree on the experimentation comments. This will be a work in progress for at least two months, and as "shampoo" put it, "scorers will self-identify". Further agree that this season may more closely resemble Forbes's first one than last year.

Now, just for grins......

Bradford -- 14
Payne -- 12
Burrell -- 12
McCloud -- 9

[That's 47/ppg there, close to Purl's 50. But that's *not* to imply all those 4 will start; Payne and McCloud likely both will not.]

Hodges -- 7
Jurkin -- 5
Harrison/Rodriguez -- 5
Long/Obi/Edwards -- 8
Overstreet/Mladden -- 5

[That's 77 total - which is too much. We won't score that much overall.]

Somebody(ies) won't get theirs; that may come off Harrison/Rodriguez, or Long/Obi/Edwards, or Jurkin, or Hodges, or who knows.
And I'm leaving Williams off, just on the perception he may red-shirt. Reppart may get his 2-4 on occasion, but doubt will average over 1-2, if one counts the games he doesn't play in.

Don't be shocked if by mid-season (or even earlier) Hodges is getting 8-10 regularly. He *will* be trying to "self-identify".
Don't be shocked if the Long/Obi and/or Harrison/Rodriguez duos only gets 3-4.
On the other hand, don't be shocked if McCloud gets 12 with enough PT. I think Forbes likes him dealing, though, more than scoring, although his quickness will get him some. Think of a thinner Petey McClain with a better shot. BUT.....he may be overmatched against some larger guards on D, which could limit said PT.
Nor.....don't be shocked if Bradford goes for 17. If he's in the game 30+ minutes, that could happen easily. One caveat to this is that if Forbes decides to put McCloud on the point more, that will limit Bradford's numbers. He's a creator, and obviously harder to do that without the ball in your hands. And since Forbes knows this, it likely won't happen much. Likewise, if he uses McCloud only to spell Bradford, then McCloud may get less than 9. That's one of the areas where the experimentation will come in. BUT.......I can see a case for McCloud's ability to make those around him better working with Bradford, who can get open without the ball, too. Extending that further......if McCloud gets good solid time at the point, it could raise the numbers of whoever's in the 4 and 5 spots.

(Let me say that I think Forbes used that last scholarship on McCloud very purposely, knowing he'll only be here a year. He knew that both Williams needs more seasoning; and that McCloud's ability to "run the show" - while being an additive presence overall were the most important missing ingredient/secret sauce. The more I think about that aspect the more I believe it.)

[Big-time disclaimer: this is just for fun and will likely have gaping errors on down the line.]

The other unpredictable factor is anyone who might quit the team. It wouldn't surprise me a bit to see someone quit by mid-season or even after Christmas due to not getting the minutes that they think they deserve. Awful tough to keep this many players happy and the current culture is to quit if things aren't going your way.

I wrote almost those exact same words - and then deleted them before posting - TWICE - out of fear of somehow jinxing things. I think, just by the statistics of such a large roster, there could be a defection or two along the way. And I have my guesses on that, too, but am not about to voice them.

Well it sounds like we've already had one to quit or get kicked off with Gray. Anyone know what happened with him?

Love it, your right, and I don't think we'll have a problem producing offense

Can we get a source, what do you mean?

Gray wasn't present at the scrimmage and was removed from the roster last week. That's all I know.

Suffice it to say he didn’t quit and he wasn’t kicked off team. Other circumstances.

Probably not enough room on the bus for him with this year's roster.07-coffee3

Guessing you're joking. Roster of 16 is same as year 1 with 14 active both years as well. Last year started at 14/13 before Walters left. Does seem like an army though.
