I just love being in a conference where I know who/when we are playing 4 years in advance. This was a huge mess in the Big East with all the NFL stadiums. I wonder if the ACC deals with that issue now with Miami and Pitt?

Some interesting things.

1. We knew from before that the we are going to get some kind of rotation in the east for the season ending games of Michigan State, Penn State, Maryland, and Rutgers (presumably because all 3 preferred ending with Penn State of the available options and not sure Penn State had a preference). Now it looks like we are starting one in the west. It was Nebraska vs. Iowa and Minnesota vs. Wisconsin. I'm not stunned they flipped it up, but kind of the way they did. Minnesota has always been the season ending game for either Wisconsin or Iowa and in these two, it will be for Nebraska with Wisconsin and Iowa playing. Presumably this will be the start of some kind of rotation.

2. This does not list Nebraska playing Black Friday, but people are jumping too much on that. It might or might not happen, but none of the previous schedules listed things that way either (the two schools simply agreed to switch).

3. Most schools have one conference game in first 3 weeks (although none week 2). I hate this, but at least it is no more than one. I really hope it does not progress from there. I particularly hate starting with a conference game.

4. Some effort to put divisional games after the crossover games. This cannot be done fully as any week everyone is playing someone must be playing a crossover game (since 7 in a division). Not sure on it, but I think they are also trying to put some of the 4 far western schools playing later in season against each other to the extent possible. That might not be right, but across a few different schedules from memory that seems right (not a rule, just a guideline followed to an extent).

5. Ohio State has had Illinois the week before Michigan when they have been on the schedule for at least 2 schedules in a row. I am guessing that is because of the above (leaving Illinois as one of the free western teams). I really do like that though as Illinois is our one trophy game and I like it being at a decent spot on schedule when we play every 3 years or so.

The former Big East schools in the ACC can still blame it on Temple. :-)

I love closing the season with Penn State, though I guess this game will rotate among Penn State, Maryland and Michigan State. Again, the Big East never did much to help rivalries develop. We should have been closing our season against UConn every year, the Backyard Brawl and Keg of Nails should also have been played Thanksgiving weekend every year, and leave USF and Syracuse hanging lol or let them play an OOC game.

In the ACC we do know who & where we are playing our conference games through the early 2020's & ND through 2036 but the when isn't answered until rather late. The pro stadiums are likely one of the reasons.

Big Ten is kind of unique in that way I believe. I don't think any others usually announce until less than a year before. That does give greater flexibility to set-up games you think might be bigger at better points which probably is also a factor why most wait. I like the long dated schedules though.

I don't mind early season conference games. It really ramps up the intensity of the season at the get-go that can really provide momentum or sting really bad and promote rivalries. Imagine if Indiana upset Ohio State in Week 1? You don't think OSU would hate Indiana more and help foster a rivalry that wasn't there before? Why do you think the NFL has so many divisional games Week 1?

My ideal Penn State schedule would look something like this:

Start the season with Rutgers or Maryland (either works, but it would be the same every year so that school can build the tradition too). Get a solid Big Ten match up in the first week that would get much more focus being likely the only intra-conference game of the season and one that probably would be overshadowed during the season but gets some spotlight here.

Follow this up with a cupcake OOC buy game, then a solid P5 opponent.

Next would likely be the majority of the non-divisional conference games. However, I would like to solidify an annual date with Ohio State as a "rivalry week" of sorts for PSU fans to look forward to. I would propose the first Saturday in October as "Ohio State Week".

Fill out the rest of the schedule with divisional opponents but have Michigan State end Penn State's conference schedule because it's tradition no matter that there isn't a rivalry there. However, this wouldn't be the last week before the conference championship. That week would have PSU play Pittsburgh just like old times.

Just my opinion but it allows Penn State to start and end with rivals new and old with others sprinkled in that would keep fan interest the whole season if things were to go south. It would still have some tradition with playing MSU in the last week of the season (for PSU) and it would build tradition playing OSU the same time each year for fans to plan around.
