Remaining Undefeated Teams Before Week 3 - ohio1317 - 09-10-2017 06:40 PM Teams with 1st Loss Week 2: Ohio U. Cincinnati Northwestern Iowa State Boston College Texas State UAB Fresno State Tulane Pittsburgh Arkansas Virginia Syracuse Louisiana-Lafayette Ohio State Auburn Stanford Notre Dame Kansas Nebraska Hawaii Marshall Idaho North Texas Missouri Louisiana Tech Western Kentucky New Mexico Boise State Arizona Arizona State Percent of Undefeated Teams with 1st Loss Week 0/1: 36.15% (47/130) Week 2: 37.35% (31/83) Maximum possible Undefeated Teams at End of the Regular Season: 11: We lost 2 this week as the Sun Belt can now only have one team finish undefeated and Notre Dame lost. That leaves us with 10 possible conference champs who can end the year unbeaten plus independent Army. Week 2 Thoughts: -Idaho was removed from this list for the last time with their loss to UNLV. As we will eventually expand this out to a 1 loss team list too though, I will continue to make notes on them until they lose one more. -Through 2 weeks, we, for the most part, have avoided any conference having a total disaster. Every one of the power conference continues to have undefeated teams seriously in the national title chase. The most at danger in that regard this week were probably the ACC and Big 12, but with Clemson taking down Auburn, Oklahoma beating Ohio State, and TCU holding strong vs. Arkansas, both conferences are still on solid footing (not that both couldn’t have got back in it, but a big perception gap was possible with losses there). -On the Group of 5 level, only the Sun Belt seems to have truly blown its best chance at getting the New Years Six bid. Given conference strength, it likely would take an undefeated team from the conference and the only remaining one is Coastal Carolina who is not eligible for a bowl this year due to being in a transition to I-A status. Only remaining hope would have to include one of the 1-loss teams in the conference having a monster upset game vs. someone very good. For the NY6 bid, the American would seem to have the strong advantage right now with 7 remaining undefeated teams although a few other teams from other conference are certainly very much on radar (particularly San Diego State). -With Georgia winning at Notre Dame, Army is our final independent undefeated team. They play Ohio State next week. Week 3 Thoughts: -We have 9 games between undefeated teams next week. They are: Illinois @ South Florida, Air Force @ Michigan, UCLA @ Memphis, SMU @ TCU, LSU @ Mississippi State, Kansas State @ Vanderbilt, Kentucky @ South Carolina, Clemson @ Louisville, Ole Miss @ Cal -1-loss Idaho plays at Western Michigan Remaining Undefeated Teams: ACC: 6, American: 7, Big 12: 5, Big Ten: 8, Conference USA: 2, MAC: 3, Mountain West: 2, PAC-12: 8, SEC: 9, Sun Belt: 1, independents: 1, total: 52 Clemson Maryland Wake Forest Duke Miami (FL) Virginia Tech Colorado Kansas State Oklahoma Oklahoma State Texas Tech Connecticut Louisville South Florida Illinois Iowa Michigan Michigan State Minnesota Penn State Wisconsin Memphis Central Florida Houston Southern Methodist Central Michigan Eastern Michigan Toledo Air Force San Diego State Texas Christian Utah California Oregon Southern California UCLA Washington Washington State Georgia Kentucky South Carolina Tennessee Vanderbilt Alabama Louisiana State Mississippi State Mississippi Army Navy UTSA Old Dominion (Coastal Carolina) RE: Remaining Undefeated Teams Before Week 3 - Frog in the Kitchen Sink - 09-10-2017 08:45 PM Good job. RE: Remaining Undefeated Teams Before Week 3 - Gamecock - 09-11-2017 08:34 AM Could Coastal Carolina theoretically play in a New Years Six bowl? I know FCS schools can and have received votes in the poll before, if they went 12-0 is there anything to stop them from getting in? Unfortunately, they are ineligible due to the FCS-to-FBS transition rules so they can't even make a bowl game this season. Next year, they can. I think this rule is crap along with the very recently overruled ban on immediately playing upon transfer. If a school is an FBS school and they play an FBS schedule, they should be eligible. Coastal Carolina's schedule this season has only 1 FCS school. They should be allowed, but aren't. However, if there is a shortage of bowl teams I'm certain there would be an exception made for them. RE: Remaining Undefeated Teams Before Week 3 - ohio1317 - 09-11-2017 07:53 PM They also wouldn't be eligible for a conference championship game if the conference had one this year (they add one next year). I am wondering if part of the reason is they do not have to have a full complement of FBS schools on schedule. Maybe I am wrong on that, but I feel other transitions teams had far more FCS teams remaining on schedule. If so, a good new rule would allow them to participate, but only letting them count one FCS win (same as everyone else). Yes, for a bowl. But they couldn't pick them for a NY6 bowl if they won their conference. With a (very possibly) enough shortage of standard bowl-eligible teams, they would be allowed in. I'm sure ESPN would finagle to set something up if they were 12-0 to play a top mid-major who didn't get to get into the NY6 bowl, to at least give them a nice one. Obviously I don't see it happening, but if they won out with basically an identical schedule as every other G5 schedule it would make for some interesting debate. I'm honestly not sure why this is counted as a transitional year if they are playing a full conference schedule and only 1 FCS team. Them's just the rules. IDK what sense it makes. They play UAB, UMASS, W. Illinois & 9 Sun Belt games. Even if they won out the rest of the G5 champs would have to have 2 or maybe three losses for them to be picked even if they weren't in transition. edit: my bad they play Arkansas too. |
